Usually I keep them in a glass vase and feed them crickets.

I've seen them:

in my kitchen drawers (twice. same drawer)
middle of my master bathroom floor
door jambs to at least three doors
ceiling directly above showerhead
nearly every wall in the house

probably about 25 in four years, after only seeing about 5 in the first three years of living there.

Anywhere from an inch to two inches.

They can be in rare cases to some people. Generally as an adult it will just hurt like hell. If stung you should call poison control. They'll tell you how you should feel, anything else you should go to the emergency room.
Something along the lines of increasing pain for about six hours, then it should die down.

I used to live at Saratoga Apartments in Mesa, near University and Dobson, when they were putting the 101 in and extending the 202. You would not believe how many scorpions that rousted from the ground. We used to take a blacklight out on the balconies and walkways and point out all the scorpions. The occassional scorpion would sneak indoors on it's own but we captured plenty of them and kept them in terrariums, feeding them crickets. We even had a pair that had a ton of babies...that's scary. The smaller they are the more dangerous they are because they do not hold back their "poison."

I live @ Higley / Southern in Mesa. We live on a cul-de-sac. Every summer we probably get a dozen or so. This past summer we went to the end of our cul-de-sac where there is a grassy area with trees right along the canal that separates us from Seizure World. The grass area is about 50 feet from my house.

Got myself a nice can of cheap hair spray and a torcher lighter.

Went out twice a week for about a month - we fried - no kidding here - about 40 scorps each night.

I'm hoping that there won't be as many this year as a result.

Hopefully I won't be there anyways - people accepted our offer on a new house @ Gilbert / Elliott - so we just have to sell ours now! Probably won't say anything about the scoprions!

Try being stung by a bark scorpion.

Bark scorpions use a potent neurotoxin, that screws with your nervous system big time. Not much pain, but tinkly, itchy sensations throughout your body. Convulsions, swelling of the tongue, increased saliva production, loss of vision, loss of muscular control, and finally breathing problems.

Ended up in the hospital, with what was dubbed by the doctors that worked with me, as the single worst sting that any of them had seen. I was miserable, and would only wish that kind of a reaction on OBL and Saddam Hussein.:D

I've lived in the valley for 23 years and I've only encountered one scorpion in that time. My wife came out of the shower and almost stepped on it. Boy did she scream!

Sounds pretty unpleasant.

I live in the north mesa section of town off of Gilbert Rd right by the 202. After they put the 202 in, I have seen several scorpions in the house.

Fortunately I have two cats, who are natural predators to them. My cat named Mouse will corner it and fight it until I come and kill it.

Cats are highly resistant to scorpion venom. If you live in a scorpion area, get a cat.

Did you see a Camel spider over there? Nastiest insect on the face of the planet, named because it will kill a camel. About 2-3 inches long, HUGE fangs, back end almost looks like a catapillar and about as fast as a rodent. When they get mad they pick the back two pair of legs off the ground and run randomly, looking to bite anything.

Not sure, but their venom is like a brown recluse.... it eats the tissue under your skin until you cut it out, like a spreading infection. They treat a bite by inserting cotton swabs with a solution INTO THE HOLES IN SKIN CREATED BY THE BITES to keep it from spreading. They are big enough they could eat a lot!!! Seriously, that is the only spider that ever scared me.

Yeah the recluse spiders are the only ones that bug me out :)

I have got stung on 2 separate occaisions by scorpions and it is no big deal. First time I was 10 yrs old while sitting in the sectional couch. Damn thing crawled up between the crack of thecouch and stung me on the inner thigh by my knee. I jumped up and saw the thing scamper away back down towards the floor. I ran into the kitchen, grabbed a can of raid, pulled the couch apart and blasted the thing. It WOULD NOT DIE!! I was floored! So I grabbed a shoe and beat it to death!! I then told my Mom what happened and we called a doctor friend of ours. He just told me to put ice on it and keep my leg elevated. No big deal. The second one got me when I came out of the shower - bastard!! Grabbed a shoe and beat it to death and grabbed some ice - no big deal.

My girlfriend and I are talking about moving back to Phoenix in the near future. My concern now for scorps, etc centers around our 8 mos old daughter. I will get the place regularly sprayed to solve that.

Bug spray doesn't work.

You use diatomaceous earth. It dries the natural wax coating on their exoskeleton and kills them.

There are plenty of places in the valley that have no scorpions, but you could just get a cat, which actively hunts and kills scorpions.

Camel Spiders or Wind Scorpions are neither spiders or scorpions.
Camel Spiders

Camel spiders are one of the fastest running arthropods. Although they have four pairs of legs, they run using only three pairs. The first pair of legs or pedipalpi are held up in front of them and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. They have very long, silky setae and are constantly moving in order to locate and pick-up prey. Despite their fearsome appearance and their strong bite, solifugids are unlikely to harm humans. In the past they were considered venomous and extremely dangerous but it is now thought that the only risk of injury resulting from them is caused by shock or infection following a bite. There is no evidence of venom in any part of their body.

Camel spiders are nocturnal predators of other arthropods including scorpions and are voracious feeders. Some species kill and feed on lizards and it is speculated that others kill mice and birds. They rely solely on their speed and stealth to catch their prey. In desert areas they are often attracted to lights at night in search of food and their appearance can cause alarm if they enter tents. It is rare to see them during the winter months and they are thought to hide or hibernate during cold periods.

Yeah, we had one take off running through our tent, and we spent the next three hours tearing the tent apart trying to corner it and kill it. Those suckers are fast.

A buddy of mine got bit on the top of the thigh one night. At fist he just thought it was a sand flea bite that was getting infected. It started out as a hole about the size of a dime, but after the pain got too unbearable, he went to the medic where they proceded to squeeze a good portion of his liquified muscle out of the bite wound.

After it was all said and done, he was left with an gaping wound about 5 inches wide in diameter. :(

Maybe I'm just a wimp, but when I was 12 a baby bark scorpion stung me while I was half asleep. I thought a thick, foot-long needle went into my arm! After that I don't remember pain, but the memory of the initial sting has stayed with me all these years.

My sister's dog was stung in the face... he didn't like it too much and kept rubbing it, but he was fine. I heard it depends on where dogs are hit as to whether or not it's dangerous for them.

I live in the Foothills as well. I used to have a great exterminator. He switched me from the regular stuff to Noxout (microencapusated diazanon) and that did the trick. Used to get 6-10/yr then it wen't down to 0-1/year.

Unfortunately they got bought out by Terminex and they don't offer that chemical. They started coming back and finally I switched to another company. They don't use Noxout but it is similar in effect, and I think I've only seen one since I switched.
