How on earth did Gary Bender get a national play by play gig? He's doing the Knicks / Nets playoff game on T N T right now. I realize my hatred for his on-air ability runs deep, but I assumed (due to comments on this board) that a lot of people dislike him. What do you guys think?

LOL!

Maybe this will get the board going! :)

I was just getting ready to start a similar thread. Unfortunately Gary Bender is a pretty well-respected and versatile play-by-play guy in basketball and football. He's just incredibly annoying.

I can't remember the last time I watched a national NBA broadcast with the mute button on. I just can't take it. He is terrible.

Something about this game makes me mad.

I can't stand the Nets. I wish the Knicks had an Amare Stoudemire to put Kenyon Martin in the trash can.

I would like to see Marbury succeed, but without Houston they are just a bad basketball team. It doesn't bother me that much though because I really don't like Isaiah Thomas.

I don't care about the Knicks.

But how could anyone like the Nets?

Kenyon Martin is such an cornholio and celebrates the whole time while he is doing NOTHING special.

He can't even score in the post unless someone creates an easy basket for him everything is very low percentage or luck.

Did Gary Bender say that this was Rex Chapman's first TNT broadcast?

I could bet my ass that Chapman has worked for TNT before regularly.

Yeah Martin has to be one of my most disliked players. I've already started to dislike Jefferson as well. Add Kidd to the mix, and I absolutely hate the Nets.

As far as Bender... I just started laughing as soon as I heard that distinct voice when I turned to TNT. I just couldn't believe he was doing a national broadcast.

as bad as bender is, you really learn to like him after hearing some of the other teams guys (in the inside package). the worst that i have ever heard (or not heard) was calvin murphy. i would normally have the volume on my tv at 20 for some dvds i might go up to 30 and for him i had to go up to 40 and then mute it for every brake.

So does anyone know if it was Rex Chapman's first broadcast?

I am 99% sure he worked for TNT before but non-Suns fans keep telling me it was his first broadcast.

I don't get the TNT halftime shows but what I picked up during the game was that Rex Chapman said something about Chuck working out.

Maybe he gets into shape to workout with Amare or some of the Suns in general after the season.

That would be nice.

I still wouldn't let him anywhere near Amare Stoudemire.

I did find one blurb on the net

Chapman, who auditioned for a job with Turner Sports this summer for its NBA broadcast team on TNT, confirmed he has spoken with ABC about the job.

That was from Nov 2003. So it sounds like he hasn't been with TNT before that.

But apparently he did do the NBA All-star game this year.

Newcomer Rex Chapman Joins Dick Stockton and John Thompson to Call TNT's HDTV Telecasts of the 2004 NBA All-Star Game

But I don't ever remember Rex being a broadcasater regularly for TNT. I only remember Majerle & Ainge doing TNT before.
