Our second rounder as a #4 is no bueno. On defense.
NTs played a combined 81% of snaps. We played our base front and still got worked which highlights the lack of talent up front. Hopefully Darius Robinson comes back right at week 5 and he can help.
CB split highlights some issues. STV played 81% and Garrett Williams played 62%. Williams seems to be viewed as only a nickel back which is fine but emphasizes other issues.
Max Melton played 19% of snaps which places him clearly at CB4 right now.
STV is giving up 66.7% completion rate, 128.9 QB rating, and has one PD this year. His best trait is not missing tackles.
Justin Jones left the game due to injury along with Khyiris Tonga. Not great as Jones only got 32% of snaps when he normally is in the 60s.
Owen Pappoe only played 8% but made a critical mistake at the end of the game. He doesn't seem like he is long for the roster at this point.
Why stunned? It's to be expected this year.I’m watching replay of the Lions game. I’m still stunned at how little pressure the Cards were able to get on the Detroit QB and how easily the Lions’ runners found holes in our defense.
IMO, the run defense was the most significant concern because that is what we have invested the most into. We ran base personnel and still couldn't hold up (even though Jones being out really hurt). My guess is Darius will help this but it still highlights a lack of talent up front.I’m watching replay of the Lions game. There are two ways to look at this IMO. You can say it is great we found a UDFA CB who beat out a 3rd round pick, 5th round pick, 2nd round pick and another 3rd round pick for our #2 CB spot OR you can say it is disappointing that all of that draft investment can't beat out a guy who has 1 PD in three games, and is giving up a 128.9 QB rating. That's pretty impressive especially from the 2023 class which also includes Starling Thomas V.
Need to hope that a guy like Robinson can get healthy and back on the field soon. Also we need to hope guys like Tune and the backup OL stay at or near 0% or that isn't a good sign for the health of this team.
Yep. Monti took a problem position into the offseason and still has a problem position even though he threw resources at it. Not good. Maybe Darius will come in and improve the issues. Unless he improves them incredibly, though, it will still be unresolved. Time will tell.IMO, the run defense was the most significant concern because that is what we have invested the most into. Why is that surprising? Lions have a good offensive line and we have a mediocre-to-bad passrush. The rams game against a line of insurance salesmen was an anomaly.I’m watching replay of the Lions game. You would hope one of those backup linemen could maybe take a position from a journeyman like brown or play over the fourth string tackle brought up from prActice squad, no?That's pretty impressive especially from the 2023 class which also includes Starling Thomas V.

Other than Paris, the Cardinals only drafted one other OT in the last two drafts and he is currently on IR. Evan Brown is a Veteran who has been playing very well at LG. I think he was a solid upgrade over Wilkinson from last season and I see no reason to put someone else in there. You would hope one of those backup linemen could maybe take a position from a journeyman like brown or play over the fourth string tackle brought up from prActice squad, no?
I would have taken this post more seriously if you would have left out the PFF grades and a Venerable tweet. lol (just a little bit of teasing)Other than Paris, the Cardinals only drafted one other OT in the last two drafts and he is currently on IR. Guilty as charged.I would have taken this post more seriously if you would have left out the PFF grades and a Venerable tweet. lol (just a little bit of teasing)
If your plan is to build through the draft and draft older NFL ready players, that strategy would not be looking like a rousing success at this point. There are two ways to look at this IMO. I also disagree that this is impressive. Our roster was gutted and still lacks talent. Despite this, we are getting role player production from top 100 drafted players. Yes, historic draft rates are what they are. Btu those rates are for all 32 teams not the ones at the bottom who lack talent and should provide the easiest path to contributing.

It is, of course, early. That said, I am not seeing the slam dunk of contributing talent that I hoped to see with 11 top 100 players drafted in two years. If your plan is to build through the draft and draft older NFL ready players, that strategy would not be looking like a rousing success at this point.

That is a narrative award, though. Here is a fun one for the betting community of Cardinals fans.
No defensive rookie has more than 1 sack. No defensive rookie has more than 1 int.
Darius Robinson is +15000 on Fan Duel for defensive rookie of the year. $10 wins $1,500.00. Maybe drop a free bet on it if you get one.
It's a long shot for a reason but if you think he will get a lot of snaps and might be the top rusher in a bad group, he isn't far behind right now from a production standpoint even though he hasn't played any games.
I did clarify top 100 players over the past two years.Just in the second year of the players from the 2023 draft and you have starters from all the top 100 picks already, minus the injury to BJ:
2023 - 1 - Paris Johnson - OT - 100% (Starting LT)
2023 - 2 - BJ Ojulari - EDGE - 0% (injured)
2023 - 3 - Garrett Williams - CB - 62% (Starting Nickelback)
2023 - 3 - Michael Wilson - WR - 90% (Starting Z Receiver)
We are 3 weeks into the 2023 season and you are concerned about rookies selected in the top 100 not contributing yet?
