It’s official. Like it or not, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will meet in a boxing ring on Aug. 26 in what likely will wind up as the richest fight in boxing history.
UFC president Dana White, Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions and Stephen Espinoza, the executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, began the promotion of the pay-per-view bout Wednesday.
“I thought it would be impossible to deal with Mayweather Promotions, to deal with [Al] Haymon and to deal with Showtime,” White said on a conference call. “I thought it would be an impossible deal to do. But it was the right fight at the right place at the right time so we got it done.”
Ellerbe said all parties signed a confidentiality agreement not to disclose financial terms, but Mayweather had demanded at least $100 million to take the fight with McGregor collecting at least $25 million. Figure them to make much more.
The bout likely will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Ticket and pay-per-view prices have yet to be determined. White said a date for the two fighters to meet in their first press conference had yet to be worked out.
