‘Shut up’ – Atlético Madrid president hits back at Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois

Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has this weekend taken full advantage of the opportunity to aim something of a dig at Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois.

Goalkeeper Courtois, for his part, grabbed the headlines in midweek, owing to a round of comments on the back of the Madrid Derby.

Drawn on Atlético’s complaints after Julián Alvarez’s spot-kick was controversially ruled out during the penalty shootout between the sides, Real Madrid’s no.1 did not hold back, in responding:

“I’m fed up with always playing the victim, always crying about things like this. Referees don’t want to benefit a team, neither in Spain nor in Europe; they saw it clearly and they whistled it like that. They’re human, and with technology, they saw it clearly. If you’re winning 1-0 in the first minute and you don’t go for the second, that’s the fault of their game.”

And as alluded to above, on Sunday, Courtois’ message has been replied to, in equally ruthless fashion.

Speaking to the media ahead of Atlético’s La Liga showdown with Barcelona later this evening, club president Enrique Cerezo was asked for his take on the comments laid out by the former Rojiblancos shot-stopper.

And Cerezo, in quotes sourced by Marca, went on to snipe:

“What he (Courtois) needs to do is shut up. He should be grateful for having been at Atlético de Madrid. He needs to do what he did with us: be a gentleman.”
