“100%” – Maresca-ball can inspire fans and get supporters back claims manager

Enzo Maresca has just taken his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Conference League quarter final against Legia Warsaw, but the questions were on a far broader selection of topics than just one rather dead rubber of a second leg.

Since the weekend, the focus has really been on Maresca’s post game comments about the “environment” at Stamford Bridge. He drew a link between the pressure the crowd put on Robert Sanchez, encouraging him to go long, and the goals his team conceded, which he attributed to them having bowed to that pressure and gone away from their principles of playing out from the back.

He was asked for his “message to the supporters” now, giving him a chance to repair relations. And to be fair to him, he did admit some fault, agreeing with the point many fans made that his team simply weren’t doing enough to inspire good support at times:

“Sometimes I completely understand that us as a team, we need to engage the fans, something that probably Sunday we were not able to do it, especially for that 20-25 minutes” the manager said.

“So, it’s also on us to be good enough and to engage our fans because we knew this season, we saw this season that when we were able to engage them, they support us in every game.”

Maresca insists style won’t change​

Well said Enzo. The fans will put their support behind you if you get good results or if you play exciting football. It’s only when they get neither that the grumbles grow. He was then asked if he was convinced he would be able to find that balance with his favoured style, and he insisted he would:

“100%. And then also because I’m not able to do a different kind of style. So, in case, I’m not the one to do a different kind of style.”
