“Would obviously be a big story” – David Ornstein provides update on possible Chelsea transfer saga

Chelsea can decide against signing Jadon Sancho in the summer by paying a fee according to transfer expert David Ornstein.

Sancho arrived on deadline day last summer on an initial loan deal from Manchester United, which will become permanent as long as the Blues don’t finish in the bottom six of the Premier League.

The 24-year-old made a good start to life at Stamford Bridge with three assists in his first three games, whilst he scored his first goals against Southampton and Tottenham.

However, since Christmas like Chelsea, Sancho’s form has also taken a dip and he’s managed just one goal contribution in 2025 against Crystal Palace at the start of January.

John Obi Mikel has been critical of Sancho, and with Mykhailo Mudryk suspended and injuries to Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson, Sancho is one of very few options available to Enzo Maresca in the wide areas.

Arguably youngster Tyrique George is offering more than the England international at this point, and Chelsea really need Sancho to step up ahead of a difficult run-in.

Fabrizio Romano had confirmed Sancho will be a Chelsea player next season, but reports emerged that Chelsea could send him back if they wanted, and Ornstein has now provided an update on the situation.

“It was a conditional obligation to by so firstly those conditions must be met and then as has been reported elsewhere, Chelsea can decide against going through with the obligation by paying a fee,” he told The Athletic.

“So, technically, he could return to United but that was not the aim of any party when they embarked upon this deal. Let’s see if that remains the case or changes, which would obviously be a big story.”

It would come as a shock if Chelsea decided to do that, but if Sancho doesn’t pick his form up between now and the end of the season you never know what the Blues might decide to do.
