QB---Palmer not in sync, second week in a row, but his last throw of the night was picture perfect. Stanton---unimpressive. Lindley---making small strides.

RB---Mendenhall explosive, but hurts knee. Alfonso Smith could be the starter---ran very well tonight, showed better vision too. Taylor and Ellington were productive. So was Ryan Williams---but it would be surprising if he could garner any trade interest. Wouldn't be shocked if BA kept all 5.

TE---Has to be the worst TE unit in the NFL. Not one of them is even average.

T---The team has to try Massie at LT. He's more athletic than Levi and Potter. Coaches will probably stick with Levi and give him some help---but you can't give him help every play. The LT situation remains shaky at best. RT not so much, as Winston looks solid, not great, but solid.

G---Man losing Cooper who already was becoming the best lineman is tough. Broken fibulas usually require 10-12 weeks immobilization, then rehab. Rachal has looked bad all pre-season. Colledge is playing hurt, a la Adam Snyder. Colledge probably shouldn't be playing right now. Fanaika should get his chance---but he is very inexperienced. The hope could be pushing Earl Watford faster than what the coaches would have wanted---but he's got the physciality the Cardinals need. Brandon Moore recently signed with the Cowboys but then decided to retire---wonder if SK could persuade him to join the Cardinals. Kelemete? Might be cut regardless. Mike Gibson may be worth a look.

C---Sendlein has been good this pre-season. Gibson's versatility, plus Cooper's injury, may have opened a roster spot for him.

WR---Fitz, Floyd and Roberts all had some good moments, despite all the setbacks. Didn't see Mike Thomas, but he's going to make the team because of his experience. Hawkins showed up again. Juron Brown? Was he even thrown to? Kerry Taylor? Once? Twice maybe?

Without decent TEs---unless BA&SK make a magical trade, BA is going to have to play to the strength of his personnel---which would mean fewer 2 TE sets and more 3-4 WR sets.

NT---Doesn't look good for Dan Williams that he's still hobbling. No depth behind him either. David Carter and Ronald Talley are not NTs.

DE---All the talk about Dockett and Campbell being turned loose is thus far invisible, and actually one has to wonder whether Bowles scheme is sound, especially for stopping the run. Big worry there, in addition to not having a reliable NT. Talley has been a nice surprise---but his penalty was stupid. Rucker had the one nice pressure.

LB---Brinkley played very well---he delivered some loud hits and generally was around the ball. He's more athletic than he gets credit for. Perhpas with Minter playing well, the coaches could kove Brinkley to SOLB, where Acho looks too slow to play the position effectively. The Chargers did the Cardinals a favor because they exploited the Cardinals slow edge players with their RBs in the passing game. Something needs to be done. Alexander is active on the weak side. Surprised we haven't seen more playing time for Okafor. Abraham remains the nickel RDE in passing situations. Matt Shaughnessy was excellent on the TEX stunts and in playing physical versus the run. He's one of the best 11 defenders on the team. This kid Kenny Rowe looks good late in the games---wish they would try him earlier in games. Dansby looks rusty and he still bear hugs for tackles.

CB---Peterson grabs and holds almost every play and now Powers on the other side. These guys need to mirror and keep their eye on the ball. Fleming made some plays which was nice to see. Didn't see much PT for Bethel---but BA knows he's already made the team because of STs and has said so. McCann with a very good ST tackle---I like that kid. Arenas was proably being held back a little because of his broken finger, but he is going to be a big part of this defense as should Cason, who was playing late into the 4th quarter...not sure why.

S---Rashad Johnson obviously was flat-out awful in this game---starting with penalties, the A-Dub-esque token thump (not wrap at all) on the goalline for the Chargers' first TD. And then the fumbling debacle. Hopefully Johnson will rectify his situation asap. Bell was solid again. But the real star in Mathieu who rushes the edge better than any player on the roster---at his diminutive size no less! Amaya got beat badly but caught back up to make an ankle tackle, albeit 40 yards down the field. Any sign of Tony Jefferson? This team needs deep cover safety options in the nickel and dime packages, especially when they want to move Mathieu up to the slot/edge.

ST---boy Kevin Spencer got his revenge with a blocked punt, a blocked FG and a very good return from rookie WR Allen. Carpenter never got to kickoff. Feely did and struggled---but had an extra point kick. Reggie Walker remains a very good ST player---but seems to be sitting on the bubble. Arenas, Thomas and Ellington are added return options---to join in the deepest mix of return men in Cardinals' history!

While things appear much bleaker after looking up the past two weeks, this bad loss might be perfect timing in generating a more clear fix-it list. Number one---get more physical and aggressive up front on both sides of the ball. Wolfley was right on the money with his comments there.

Mitch, I don't know how you managed to find that much positive in that game tonight.

We have no shot to beat the Rams. That defense might knock out both Palmer and Stanton in week one.

Any FB's available? I see no TE's falling into our laps worth more than what we already have. Players are expected to be flexible with schemes, and systems, and such, perhaps coaches should be as well.

I know it's pre-season but what I saw tonight has me very pessimistic about this year. Unless we can stop the run, we are screwed. Not 100% confident with our cornerbacks, especially without a viable pass rush. O-line scares me as well, Cooper going down was like getting punched in the stomach. May be a long season, who knows, but that big smile I had on my face from the first pre-season game is fading fast.

I went from expecting 8 wins to expecting 6. I found myself estimating where we'd pick in the draft with 6 wins and then checking draft sites to see who to keep an eye on. Only Cardinals fans check draft sites in August.

Mitch-----your analysis is right on as usual. I am not ready to give up on Levi just yet however. Remember, he was up against Dwight Freeney tonight, and there are not many of him in the NFL. He did fare better last week against Dallas' speed guy (Ware?). I can't remember his name. Still, it may not hurt to try Massie at LT. We need the best five out there at all times. I just don't know if Massie is any better, (or worse), than Levi. This may be the break Faniaka needed. Let's hope that he can step in and play, (and that Watford continues progressing). We don't need to help LT all the time, but we do need to help against premiere speed rushers. Levi is just too slow, (that is why he jumps the count so often against speed rushers). He plays the snap on the razor's edge, and sometimes gets caught.

Our TE's are flat out terrible. Not a good one in the bunch, and hasn't been one for years.

I was happy about the running game as it was solid enough to have opened the passing game, (if someone had thrown and caught decently).

Looks like K-9 was closer to this than we were. I hope this shakes up BA so that he concentrates on what we CAN do instead of what he hopes we can do. He needs to find the fix that you spoke about, and find it fast. He also needs to prod our DL into suiting up and coming to play next time the whistle blows. They hardly bothered to show up tonight, and were NEVER nasty enough to play with SD in this game. Maybe some hard work in the hot sun is warranted after this fiasco.

Mitch, a couple of questions:
1. Walker on the bubble? I wouldn't think so since DW is out for at least four games. Plus his ST play is VG. Only way I see him being cut is if someone better shows up on the WW.
2. I know the TE's have been terrible in the passing game, but should they get some credit for the running game? It's been quite a while since we've run the ball so well. And I do see DC Jefferson making strides, and while the PS is probably where he belongs, is it possible he'd be picked up if put on waivers?
3. By not playing him very much, what does it tell us about Tony Jefferson? The team doesn't want him to be on some other team's radar, because they want to be able to get him onto our PS? Or do they just think he's not good enough to make the '53', and wanted to look at other guys?
4. Levi struggled big time, but any improvement is a draft away. And he's faced Mathews. Ware and Freeney in succesive weeks. That is a pretty good test for any LT, and probably tells SK what position he must target next April.
5. I know they say the fewer changes you make on the OL, the better. So while I think we'd be better served by moving DC back to the left side, and starting Paul Faniaka at RG that would be TWO changes. If we play PF at LG, there would be only ONE change, but with someone as inexperienced as Faniaka, I think two is better in this case.
6. Antoine Cason was held out as JP really struggled. Why? Is he out of the running for even the nickle job?
7. And last but, imo, the most important question. In building a fb team, they say the secret to success is a) protecting your QB and b) getting to their QB. Which is our biggest worry?

About as bad a night as we could have possibly had. The injuries are what hurts the worst.

Look, we all hope for the same thing. We saw signs of good things to come up until this game. That being said there really is no way to fix everything that is/was wrong with this team coming into this season.

I wonder how long we will keep attempting to play a 3/4 without a legitimate NT? We've been trying this for a long time and we always have the same problem...we simply can't stop the run.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again, one of the TE's that will be on the 53 man roster is not on this team yet.

I hope for a .500 season. With all the changes that would be remarkabe. For us to attain that we need to be a smart team. We need to win the turnover battle, minimize penalties and win the special team game every week. If we do those 3 things we will at least be competitive. If we don't we will get blown out much like tonight.

Consider this. Housler catches the ball and it's tied 7-7. We make a FG it's 10-7. Johnson simply falls on the ball we have a half time lead inspite of everything else. None of that happen so we basically got blown out. We got beat in every phase of the game.

We simply are too thin at too many key positions to match up with the likes of the Seahawks and the 49ers. THEY are set up to smash us. Both teams can run the ball down our throats and both teams can stuff the run. We can't get pressure on their QB without blitzing and they can bring it with 4 guys. Not a recipe for competing for the NFC West title.

Brown - Colledge - Sendlein - Faneika - Winston

We don't know if it's a simple or compound fracture. What is the return time for an athlete with a simple fracture?

And according to Cardschatter, Mendenhall was an ankle, not a knee. Dumpster - low ankle - Housler - high ankle.

Fanika or Rachal or Kelemete or Watford or whoever comes in for Cooper will be our 6th different Guard to start the season (or was supposed to start) in the last 4 years. 2007-2009 we had two.

B/t/w, does anyone have any thoughts, as to why we were able to run the ball so well? I have us as running it 18 times for 120 yards (8+ PA). Is that correct, and is it just because SD is bad defending the run?

For one thing our Tight Ends were making some great blocks. Of course then they'd do something Cardinal like dropping a pass or getting a false start. Same thing happened last week.

Here's some thoughts at 8am:

- This team might be the most talented/deep in a very long time... And yet, they are still sub-standard.

- Ariens and his staff now have perhaps the largest challenge sitting in front of them, of their entire coaching careers. Can they assemble a starting unit that will be even remotely capable of putting up respectable fights? Can they create enough situations where Palmer is not running for his life so that he might be able to toss a ball or two somewhere close to Fitz or Floyd?

- We have zero pass rush ability... Or, perhaps they just didn't want to show their hand all preseason?? LOL...

- Our special teams are sooooo not special.

- Is Ariens a leader? We're now about to find out . What shows up on Sept 8th in St. Louis will be extremely telling. I am preparing for the worst and hope I'm pleasantly surprised should be only lose by 3 TD's...

What I saw very plainly , different Intensity Level at the snap of the ball .
Chargers --- Jacked themselves mentally , came to the field fired up and ready to play winning football , high intensity on a consistent basis .
Cardinals --- Used their pregame time to read a few more of those fluff articles
about how good they (Cardinals) are .

This can be fixed , and BA has two weeks to make sure that it gets fixed . I have not wavered , I still believe we will beat the Rams Sept. 8 .

I hope so. Injuries aside, the next game will be very telling in regards to whether this was an anomaly/collective brain fart or something far more concerning.

Another thought. If Dan Williams is going to be out for a long time, and we're left w/o a NT should we switch to a 4-3? Shaughnessey-Dockett-Campbell-Abraham across the front and Brinkley (Sam)-Minter (Mike)-Dansby (Will) at LB.

The mistakes are what stood out for me. We had a much cleaner game against Green Bay. Not sure all 3 calls on Powers were legit but he is awful out there. I like Cason and Arenas better. Why Tony Jefferson didn't get more time is beyond me.
The offense still doesn't look like they are on the same page. This D will miss Horton as much as I thought they would. I predicted a 5-6 win season and I will stick with that. The Rams will beat the crap out of this team in St Lou.

The injuries are just salt in the wound. I was loving watching Mr. Cooper. We also stand no chance running the ball without Mendenhall.

Sadly the next game won't tell us anything because Denver won't play any of their starters and most likely neither will Arizona.

We could have hoped that yesterday was just an anomaly, though being a Cardinal fan for any length of time makes swallowing that extremely difficult, but Cooper's injury is just a killer.

Agree, next week will show nothing. Our starters will not play much. They need the work, but can't risk more injuries.

Coopers injury is a low blow. One that us Cardinals fans know very well.

Semi good news is that Dumpster Dans ankle has been reported an a mild injury and he should be ready for the Rams.

If he can't go or is limited then I do see more 4 man fronts used in some situations but we won't be switching to a 4-3 scheme exclusively. When/if we use those 4 man fronts Brinkley would be the odd man out IMWO. He doesn't have the speed, especially for the Sam position. He barely has the speed for the SILB position.

Reggie Walker & Alexander would get reps before Brinkley and probably Minter (at least early in the year).

I know this is old news, but, for the record...

The fibula is the smaller, non-weight bearing bone. I broke mine, it was non-displaced (no surgery required). I was in a splint for a week and a half, followed by a walking boot.

Surgery, depending on the severity, would obviously require more time in a cast (immobilized), but "usually requiring 10-12 weeks" is overstating the situation. Maybe we can blame that on 1:44 AM? ;)

If you work in an office 10 - to - 12 weeks is absolutely overstating the situation .
If you work on a football field , who can say ?????????????
