As Coach Green revs up the state and the players with his 10-6 prediciation I have had to wonder what he was thinking. But after pontificating over several Sam Adams and GV Maduros it appears to be an excellent long term strategy.
Heres my take on how a one year predicition turns into a three year plan.
He has already turned 1/3 of the roster over and I would predict that by the end of year three there will only be 6 or 10 left from this years roster using 10-6 as leverage.
Year one 2004 He has set himself up for a win win. If this team makes 10-6 ( hopeful but unlikely) he will make coach of year and cement himself as the team leader. He will be given more authority and will use it to make further roster changes in years two and three.
Year two 2005 If he doesnt meet the goal he will point to the talent base and to his systems success to demand more help. Because of the improvement 8-8 / 7-9 and the excitement generated by some surprising wins ( See Sec 11 NE prediction) He will be able to open the company vault for one or two FAs to fill the gaps and use the NE method of roster rotion to bring in more Special teams and D help.
Year three 2006 After acheiving the playoffs in year two against a weaker schedule due to the rotation he will be given free reign to complete the roster transformation for a run to the top. With the revenues generated from the covered cactus expect to see contract extensions to cement the nucleus to create a perenial contender ala Buff in the early nineties.
I believe that Coach Green has had a couple of years to set up a plan to take a moribund franchise to the top.
Like the hike to Picacho Peak there will be many turns along with steep climbs and unanticipated but necessary decents on the way to the peak.

Hang on its gonna be a fun ride.

7 or 8 wins would be pleasing. Anything above that is coach of the year territory.

If he goes 10-6....does that put him in "great coach" company?

I dunno, he had 8 playoff years in 10 seasons. I think the "great coach" term already applies...maybe that's why I'm so excited about Denny Green as our coach.

I completely agree with Skkorp. 7-9 wins is absolutely do-able with this team, anything more than that is definitely coach of the year material.

 Agree. A lot of talent on the team, but still too many question marks.
