The New York Jets are hopeful that Justin Fields takes off.
During the first wave of the NFL's 2025 free agency period, the 26-year-old signed a two-year deal in New York. The contract is reportedly worth $40 million with $30M of that guaranteed.
After being a top selection at the NFL draft, Fields gets another shot at becoming a franchise quarterback.
Before rooting for Fields in 2025, get to know him a bit more now.
With that, here are 10 things to know about the new Jets QB:
Fields entered the NFL during the 2021 draft. That year, the Chicago Bears grabbed him at No. 11 overall and he had an up-and-down time there. Because of that, Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March 2024.
The Jets are his third team.
Fields was selected out of Ohio State by the Bears. His school is a reason why some in New York are excited about his addition.
While there, he was teammates with... tight end Jeremy Ruckert and O-lineman Josh Myers. Yes, even the new offensive lineman for the Jets, signed this offseason, was his teammate.
But the real connection is Garrett Wilson. The No. 1 receive and new QB thrived together at Ohio State:
Fields had a curious time with the Steelers.
Yes, he was eventually benched when veteran Russell Wilson was healthy. However, Fields did have a winning record at 4-2 when he was sat which is why teams like the Jets and Steelers wanted to sign him during free agency this offseason.
With the Bears, Fields was 10-28 overall.
The team wanted Fields back. A few big-name players of past and present here hopeful Fields would return to Pittsburgh, too.
Defensive tackle Cam Heyward said he was "bummed" Fields left according to PennLive.com
“First of all, Justin’s a class act. He’s a guy that works his tail off and wants to lead by example. I was kind of bummed it didn’t work out here. I thought we were going to have a chance to get him. But, I know that dude is going to dominate in New York."
In addition, legendary Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger felt similar.
“I’d like to see what Fields could do in another year of that offense,” Roethlisberger said on his podcast Footbahlin. “Whether you want to bring someone else in, let’s see what he can do in a second year of an offense. There’s some familiarity. He’s had a new system every year. He may be more comfortable. Obviously, we’re not taking into account contracts and all that kind of stuff. I’d like to see what Fields could do another year.”
Fields is a quarterback... he throws the ball. But he's ready to take off with his legs as well.
In 2022, Fields had 1,143 rushing yards. That is the second most for a QB in a single season in NFL history. In addition, he averages 50.2 rushing yards per game in his career.
After transferring from Georgia to Ohio State, Fields nearly played on the baseball team too.
Fields committed to Georgia with the intent of playing just football. After Fields transferred to Ohio State, though, Major League Baseball scouts asked Buckeyes baseball coach Greg Beals if Fields would consider playing baseball, according to Cleveland.com's Nathan Baird.
It did not end up happening in the end.
Fields has been in front of cameras since his high school days in his hometown of Kennesaw, Georgia.
Fields was one of three high school quarterbacks who starred in Season 2 of Netflix's "QB1: Beyond the Lights" series. The show followed Fields' senior season at Harrison High School, where he won the 2018 Mr. Georgia Football Award.
Like any human, Fields has health concerns and needs to look after himself. According to the Jets' website, Fields deals with an "epileptic condition."
The explanation from the team can be found below:
One way Fields looks after himself is through pescatarianism.
Previously a vegan, Fields took up pescatarianism so he could order easier when dining out, he told the Chicago Bears' website.
But he did admit he "might get me a little burger every now and then, but I just don't crave a steak."
Fields is known for wearing a visor on his helmet. Often a tinted one.
Speaking to GQ Magazine, Fields kind of revealed why. He called sunglasses an "essentially" for him.
Sunglasses, it's really just a vibe for real. Whether I'm driving around or just walking around or, you know, even out, I just throw the glasses on. I just feel like I'm in my own world for real, Fields said.
But for those curious, Fields is not a flashy guy. Often wearing a necklace or earrings, the QB admitted... it's probably not the real deal. Fields called himself "cheap" and said he often buys off of Amazon.
