The Diamondbacks have 3 things to work on and they might be competitive in the near future.

1.) offense
2.) defense
3.) pitching

Yes 2001 was a great season. I can't believe the team disassembled after they won it all. The Yankees were playing on high emotion, but the combo of Johnson and Schilling were too much for them IMO. It was a great series and season for the DBacks even though Womack got that hit to beat the Cards.

Disassembled, like the 1997 Marlins? No, that's not what happened at all. The end result has been the same, even if it did take 3 years to accomplish. This franchise is in an immense hole that will take years to dig itself out of.

The 2001 D-backs were a collection of last hurrahs (Williams, Bell, Grace), career years (Womack, Gonzo) and a 2 1/2 man pitching staff (RJ, Schilling, Batista) that overcame a totally incompetent bullpen. There was really no expectation that this team would be kept together very long.

Where the organization fell flat on its face was in failing to restock. And what restocking they did, was sent to Milwaukee. The chronic overspending that has plagued the franchise since Day One finally caught up to them as well.

The folks in milwaukee arn't exactly burning up the base paths right about now. Injury's and scouting have made that group look pretty average.

The actual over spending began when the diamondbacks joined MLB...not only did they have to pay an entry fee that was in the millions...they couldn't even touch the t.v. revenue pie for at least 3 years.

Lyle Overbay is still hitting over .300, but has not been producing as a heart-of-the-batting-order guy. At his best, he'll be a J.T. Snow type non-power hitting 1B.

Spivey wasn't overwhelming before he got injured. My former favorite D'back Craig Counsell has too many o-fers and would best be utilized as a utility infielder from this point on. And Moeller's .215 batting average is a far cry from his .268 of last year.

So even with Sexson's injury, the four we traded would not have made a difference in our last-place performance.

If Richie had not been injured, we would have been a much better hitting team. In fact, once he got acclaimated . . . we were . . . until he checked his swing . . . twice.

As studies have shown, there is a very small window of success in attempting a checked swing. There is (as Richie proved) great risk. And very little to be gained in doing it. I wonder if he, and other players, have learned that.
