xbox live silver is without paying. it gives you access to downloads and etc but you cannot play online among many other features that get stripped. When you have gold, you have access to everything including gaming online. If you can game online, you have gold.

Gold costs $60 minimum if auto renews, you can buy this instead, put the code in and it will extend your current subscription another 13 months.

occasionally silver customers get free weekends where they can do netflix and game online and stuff as a teaser to get them to buy but beyond that it is very limited.

Can can usually find it in the sub 40 range if you search, or wait until it goes on sale. I found it for $30 a while ago so I bought 3 years worth. Mine is up at the end of the year, so I will probably buy the NFL one that I just saw.

1 year is out right now for 40 bucks at microsoft store and amazon. At least it was last week.

You can stack memberships so anytime you see a smoking deal you can buy it and add it to your existing subscription.
