I guess Kerr might have intentionally angered Marion with that reality check statement. That gave him enough reason to be unhappy and us enough reason to trade him. ;) Normally, Kerr appears to be a guy that tries to sugarcoat everything, unlikely to commit that kind of EQ blunder.

I think Kerr is obviously learning on the job, which is why we have seen questionable moves. I couldn't think of a thing Kerr has done right until this trade for JR honestly.

It's refreshing to hear the truth. At least now I know why the situation with Marion worsened. I already knew Kerr was riding on DA's back.

"It really burned that we had four straight years of competing at the highest level, yet, in the end, (management's) attitude was like we didn't win a championship so we didn't do nothing," declared D'Antoni, whose teams during that stretch averaged 58 victories. "That really burned me more than anything!"

Agreed 100% Coach D. Fans and idiot GMs (like Kerr) get so hung up on a title, if you don't win the title, you're nothing, which is nonsense. The journey is whats important, and the 4 years w/ D'Antoni were the best journey and the most fun ride the Suns have ever had over a 4 year stretch (though the lone 92-93 year was probably a bit more of a high, but not for as long).

You just dont tell your guy he's not as good as he thinks he is. NBA players are mostly egomaniacs, thats terrible psychology for handling these guys. They hear rediculous praise from their agents and then youre not very good from your employer, wonderful! Please dont tell shaq or amare that, Mr. Kerr. If DA believed that they put him in a position that undermined his influence with the players and damaged his ability to do his job, he did the right thing. Perhaps this is partly why the better coaches are not micromanaged, it would hurt their ability to get players to buy in to their philosophy. Porter surely has that problem now.

Even an ostrich knows that when top management undermines the boss, he loses his employees. Just ask your CEO buddy about that one. Geesh, sometime a snake can be right there but you cant see it until it bites you.

I personally never faulted DA for what I knew Kerr was screwing up behind closed doors. It was clear their were differences in philosophy between Kerr and Dantoni, Mike wanted to win and Kerr wanted to put his input on how to coach, which pissed Mike off to have some unexperienced GM trying to tell him how to coach. I said before it won't be long people will miss Mike because he was one of the best coaches we have had in Phx in along time. And if you don't think Mike taught the players defense take a look at the team now...still looks about the same, players play defense if you don't have players that are good at it thats what you get. Porter is supposed to be this big defensive guru and here we are with a defense that gives up just as many points and easy baskets, who would have thunk that players had something to do with it...wait coach D did!

On the second article, no chance the Knicks move David Lee for Boris, when they can extend Lee for less than Diaw this summer.

As to defense, you forgot that Bell had been mentally on strike this season.:bang: And apparently, Diaw wasn't into Porter's system as well. Amare and Nash were all unhappy at times for whatever reasons. Defense needs people to execute.

Now THAT'S being on the same page.

:D

At least we agree that Bell wasn't putting much effort under Porter. The positive implication is that we may hold hope that defense under Porter could stil improve when every player on the team behaves "professionally" enough.:)

Very interesting, albeit one-sided, article.

DA's stance that he couldnt change his approach to players midstream seems warranted. Those are just classic management principles.

Well, again--no, not exactly. I think that all the players--including Raja--were ready and willing to really give it a try at the beginning of the season. When it quickly became painfully obvious that the new approach wasn't suited to the players running it, the team was falling apart and collage-making wouldn't help, everyone started having second thoughts--"everyone" including Raja, Nash, even Amare, eventually Porter, and now Kerr.

Yep, appearing indecisive makes you look like an idiot. And nobody wants to follow an idiot with their multimillion careers with guaranteed contracts.

In all fairness, both sides were at fault. Newbie Kerr for trying to micro-manage, and D'Antoni for having too much pride and a thin skin.

You gotta be kidding me? I have been a Suns fan for more than 30 years. We have had a great "journey" but no titles. I have enjoyed the team. I loved D Antoni's team, but do you want a coach that is content with something less than a title?

I'm not a huge Kerr fan and I don't like Sarver at all, but D Antoni has some flaws. He was so stubborn he refused to use his bench. We watched year after year while Steve Nash literally burned out in the playoffs. That San Antonio series revealed other serious coaching flaws.

Kerr asked him to go deeper on the bench and play a little more D. We ALL wanted that. If a coach can't take a little advice from his GM, there is a problem.

Should Kerr have handled Marion more delicately? Probably. But it was Marion that was delusional. At some point, someone has to tell the King he isn't wearing clothes.

D Antoni should have taken his GM's advices and tweaked his system slightly. He should have stayed here. Marion should have taken the generous extension that the Suns would have been offered and been happy.

That is what I hate about pro sports most (especially the NBA)--oversensitive, unrealistic egos.

You don't hire an analyst if you aren't interested in his opinions.

Like it or not, Sarver hitched his train to Kerr and D'Antoni had to get on board or catch the next one. He obviously choose the train out of town. You can't fight the owner and expect to win.

Yeah but the problem is for life long Suns fans is the "journey" to a title is neverending. D'Antoni is not the first coach to put an exciting product on the floor. We have had exciting teams before.

The Suns have been enteraining no doubt but I want a title. Sorry, but I agree the Suns have not done anything other then entertain until we bring a title home.

I agree that as a GM, Kerr should have found another way to deliver the same message. Couldn't he at least have tried saying..."bottom is your too expensive". Then maybe try and work something out. It wouldn't be the first time a GM has stretched the truth to keep Vets on a team. You see examples every single year of players taking less to stay.

Then again, with Marion's ego...that probably would not have worked.

And if you don't think Mike taught the players defense take a look at the team now...still looks about the same, players play defense if you don't have players that are good at it thats what you get. You have to have the horses I agree. The team has improved in allowing less points per game and improved on interior defense. We are actually giving up fewer easy buckets then in the past not more.

As others have pointed out we are playing worse defensivley at the guard positions then ever before (especially SG). IMO, I would rather have a more balanced defense but if I had to choose...give me better interior defense. At the very least 3PT FG % is much lower then a layup.

In all fairness, both sides were at fault. Newbie Kerr for trying to micro-manage, and D'Antoni for having too much pride and a thin skin.

Best post yet. Both sides were at fault no doubt. Does anybody else ever doubt that had this team stil be in the hands of Jerry all of this high school drama crap never would have happened?

Uhh what do you say to the guy when he wants a huge extension and you have no interest in giving it to him?

"Yeah Shawn, you're great, you're worth 20 million a year, but we'll only offer you 7?"

I think it's pretty safe to say that both sides were at fault as well. The whole way it all went down probably could've been prevented, however, it didn't, and it was time to move on. I think the writing was on the wall before the Marion trade. I never felt like they were going anywhere, and even before Shaq got here, I felt at times that DA had lost his team.

Please forgive me as I've only been about half paying attention, but is there little doubt that Sarver/Kerr/Porter are going to turn this team into the Spurs 2.0, with the slow, methodical play?
