Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier both declared with no agent. Actually glad because now people can stop saying UCLA has guys declaring because they hate playing for Ben Howland. Assuming CDR declares as expected Memphis will have 4 underclassmen declaring. Anderson and dozier are both projected as 2nd rounders right now possibly undrafted(anderson apparently moving up a bit).

Now people can finally see that what's really happening is starters on good teams that get a lot of exposure suddenly have a lot of people telling them to declare and many of them do.

If I'm not mistaken, there's also a new rule that is probably contributing to more underclassmen declaring to test the waters. In short, the new rule allows NBA teams to pay for players expenses to work out for the team. In the past, underclassmen who declared had to pay all their expenses to workout for NBA teams. Many underclassmen who weren't locks for the first round, couldn't afford to declare and travel to different cities to work out and thusly didn't declarre. Now, underclassmen can get a free all-expense paid trip to NBA cities to meet with NBA teams and not worry about the cost.

I've actually been trying to find the wording on that rule I read that it applies to juniors but I haven't seen anybody say conclusively if it applies to sophs and freshmen too?

Gary Parrish just mentioned it in a column and he too said juniors declaring are just being smart taking advantage of the rule change that allows NBA teams to pay for private workouts, but he too didn't say can freshman and sophs do that too?

The other interesting Memphis thing is we now know the real reason Derrick Rose didn't have a press conference to announce he was leaving. Seems he got into a fight with a Memphis football player(over a girl of course) and he was on the losing end of the fight and his face showed it enough that he decided he didn't want to be seen looking like that at a press conference.

Dumb football player he should have waited a week and then sued Rose!

Note, my first post was wrong CDR has in fact declared in fact his mother says the decision is final he's gone and will hire an agent.

And Hashim Bailey is transferring so Memphis has all 5 starters in the draft 3 definitely gone, and they lose a backup C who wants more PT. 6 guys in one year 5 of whom have eligibility left. Seems guys aren't really leaving because they don't like the coach they're leaving because they want to play, either in the NBA, or somewhere else(like Bailey).

Here's an article from DraftExpress about the new rule.

From this article it seems like any underclassman can declare, but there are restrictions as to what NBA teams can pay for and the duration of the all-expenses-paid work out.

Thanks I hadn't seen that and it's pretty interesting. Does explain why so many guys are declaring. It'll be interesting to see if NBA teams actually start telling some guys sorry you're not good enough we won't even pay for your workout?

What's really interesting to me is that this rule essentially makes it so that all players with 1 year of eligibility remaining should essentially declare for the draft as long as they haven't done so previously. It can only help players no matter where their draft stock is. You may be a marginal player that probably won't get drafted, but maybe a NBA team wants to bring you in to match up against another player for a workout. You get a free trip to visit with NBA personnel and go up against players who are better than you. Who knows, you may end up playing great and impressing some team who otherwise wouldn't have given much thought about drafting you or you at least get your name out there and get a little bit of publicity.

Memphis doesn't have underclassmen. It has NBA prospects and future playground supervisors.

Class is something regular students attend.

Didn't the Suns draft a flop from there named William Bedford? He was a center, I think. Dumber than a bag of rocks. Stayed eligible for 4 years, though.

Nothing ever changes in Memphis.

Yup. Googled it. 1986, #6 pick of the whole draft. William Bedford.

Words of wisdom right there Skorp. Lived there in Memphis from 2003-may of last year. Happy to be out of that place for sure.

Their players are thugs and Anderson and dozier will be NBA busts. Rose will be a good player and CDR will have a solid 6th man type career.

Well I've been saying that for awhile but since Memphis beat UCLA people now think it's sour grapes. During the NCAA final Dorsey was shooting FT's and the announcer commented that he went to a particular prepschool in North Carolina and that many famous alums from there including ex ACC great Charlie Scott(North Carolina). He was clearly expecting Billy Packer to jump in and talk about Scott and instead Packer chuckled and said "yes John likes that prepschool in fact at one time he had SEVEN players on his roster from that one school."

The school is Laurinburg institute, I first heard about it years ago when the Warriors drafted their version of William Bedford, Chris Washburn who'd attended Laurinburg before NC State. When Chris was with the Warriors a guy wrote a book where he exposed Jim Valvano saying that Washburn had grades changed and work done for him his entire time at NC State and that Chris was "functionally illiterate" when he joined the Warriors(ie he couldn't read or write at a level that allowed him to function in society).

Washburn was asked about the story and asked how he got through 4 years at a prestigous prepschool and he responded same thing I never went to class or did any work it was all taken care of.

Was 20 years ago of course. Memphis had a recruiting class in 2005 that had 4 kids from the same Laurinburg, Dorsey had come the year before, 2005 featured Dozier, ANderson, Shawne Williams and one other kid. Williams played one year and went pro. All 5 kids signed with Memphis out of highschool, failed to qualify, and were sent to Laurinburg for one year magically qualified and enrolled in Memphis. After the 2005 season the coach at Laurinburg, Chris Chaney, left for the Patterson School in North carolina another prepschool. Chaney said he left because Patterson had a much nicer campus and facilities and it would be easier to recruit than it had been at Laurinburg. He also pointed out he'd had some resistance at laurinburg, that resistance was prior to his arrival it was a traditional HS with most of the players being 4 year players. He changed that to it being a school where most of the players were 5th year players (or 6th as many had been reclassified) and were there just for basketball, seems laurinburg alums were a bit unhappy that their school had turned into a diploma mill they didn't want the same bad press they got from Washburn, so Chaney left.

Since 2005 when Chaney left, Memphis hasn't signed a single player from Laurinburg but now has 3 guys on their roster from Patterson(assuming Matt Simpkins qualifies this year). The first recruiting class Chaney had at Patterson included 2 fairly well known Pac 10 players, Davon Jefferson who Chaney kicked out of school for cutting classes, and Jordan Hill. Hill was sort of guilt by association he was a late bloomer who didn't have lots of offers out of highschool so he went to prepschool for a year to get more exposure to college scouts, worked perfectly got to UA. Jefferson was the exact opposite went there hoping to get free grades and wound up getting booted.

With the new NCAA crackdown on prepschools it's going to be really interesting to see how Calipari recruits at Memphis. Year by year the ratio of preps to non preps on his roster is dropping since the rule change. One year 8, this year 6, next year less. He's able to get national recruits like Rose and now Tyreke Evans but with less prep guys he may have to actually start recruiting in the city of Memphis again. Longtime college fans will remember the days when Memphis was a power that often had virtually its entire roster from Memphis(Penny Hardaway, Keith Lee etc).

Memphis and Louisville were the 2 schools most taking advantage of the prepschool nonsense, Tim Floyd started doing it at USC but then the rules changed and he too has to look for a new method of recruiting.

The way you feel about Bedford is the way most Warrior fans feel about Washburn, one of the more embarassing players to have worn a Warrior uniform.
