2 Suns exposed to draft
White, Eisley likely on list

The Arizona Republic
Jun. 12, 2004

The Charlotte Bobcats received an expansion draft list of available players Friday that likely included Jahidi White and Howard Eisley of the Suns.

Charlotte must take a player from 14 teams to start its initial roster. Although Suns officials are not at liberty to discuss names, it is believed that White is a strong candidate for the Bobcats if Phoenix provides incentives.

The Suns can send $3 million and draft picks to Charlotte as enticement for taking White or Eisley.

However, White's age (28), contract (one remaining year at almost $5.9 million), defense and rebounding make him more attractive than Eisley, whose age (31), contract (two years at close to $13.3 million) and shooting (36.8 percent last season) make him an unlikely selection.

Phoenix would benefit from additional cap space for its free-agent pursuits.

Some big names with bigger contracts will be available to Charlotte, which is expected to focus on young, inexpensive players.

Allan Houston, Kerry Kittles, Glenn Robinson and Jerry Stackhouse reportedly were not protected by their teams.

The expansion draft is June 22 (or June 23 if the NBA Finals go to Game 7).

Charlotte will start with a salary cap of about $29 million and will get a full cap in 2006-07.

I believe that Phoenix was forced to expose the rights to Donnell Harvey (RFA) as well as Jahidi and Eisley. Not that it matters, if the Suns provide enough 'incentive'...

free agents, or even RFA dont count.

RFA most definitely do count.

If you go over to hoophype.com right now, they've got a bunch of articles on the expansion draft. Among the players reported to be exposed are DeShawn Stevenson, Jeff Trepagnier, and Tamar Slay, who are all identified as RFAs right there in the paragraph--you won't have to click on the links or do any research.

Donnell Harvey is an unrestricted free-agent though. RFA's need to be protected, but if they are left unprotected and then selected I believe they become unrestricted free agents.

Isn't there some restriction on the original team resiging the player if he was an RFA?

How many players do each team need to expose? I saw some teams naming four guys, isn't that the number? If so the Suns have 2 other guys that had to be on the list! Who knows the official number? :hulk:

Its not how many you have to expose its how many you can protect.

I think it is 8.

If you only have 8 under contract you don't have to leave anybody exposed.

According to the rules. the maximum you can protect is 8 players, but the minimum you must expose is 1! If you only have to expose 1 guy, then the 8 maximum seems moot! ;)

I'm pretty sure you're right. I read that he was a RFA somewhere, but I can't find it, and I don't see it anywhere else.

I thought I read that the player's original team couldn't re-sign him for a year, but take that with a grain of salt.

I believe the rule is, the team has to expose one player. After they've chosen which player to expose, they can protect up to eight of their players under contract and RFAs, and all of the team's other players and RFAs are exposed to the draft.

Essentially, the Suns (who have ten players under contract) are protecting eight players (Amare, Marion, JJ, Barbosa, Zarko, Lampe, Jake, and Casey Jacobsen) and exposing everybody else (Eisley and Jahidi). Teams that have twelve players under contract can still only protect eight, so they have to expose the rest (i.e. four players).

gambo and ash reported on friday that there is already a deal in place with the bobcats. they take white and they get the 3 million and a first round pick, they did not know if the first round pick was clevelands or a future suns. i think the bobcats would have taken white without any incentive but they know they have got the suns over a barrel.

If this is true you're right about the Suns bending over. They've bent over big time this past year to clear cap space.

They better get some big names or they'll draw about 5,000 a game at AWA next year.

Huh? Just because they lose Jahidi White and a marginally good draft pick, they're in danger of only 5000 a game? I think you're heavily mistaken there. More than 5000 kept showing up after the Marbury trade. I'm not sure why you think that we will be less popular with pretty much the same exact team, just another year older and another year more experienced.

These are the same guys who insisted that both Bryant and McGrady were coming, right?

no......they said that kobe and mcgady had talked about playing together and the suns were looking into whether phoeinx could be a destination for them. just becouse it won't happen doesn't mean that the suns didn't look into it. gambo and ash never said it was going to happen.

I would not be shocked if they gave up the Cleveland pick to move White, but the lottery pick would be too much.

if they give up their lottery pick then they should be shot, maybe for eisley but not for white. i think it would have to be clevelands pick becouse they can't trade a future first rounder of there own until they give san antonio the pick that they are owed.
