Liberty right-hander Michael Solbach was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 48thth round of the Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday evening.

Solbach, a redshirted sophomore from Woodbridge, Va., was taken in the 48th round and was the 1429th pick overall. The right-hander can opt for signing a contract with the Diamondbacks or elect to stay at Liberty for another year.

This past season, the pitcher posted a 7-4 mark with a 4.66 ERA, while striking out 71 and walking 25 in 85 innings. For the second straight season, he was among the Big South Conference leaders in wins and strikeouts.

In his first season on the mound for the Flames in 2005, Solbach was among the Big South leaders as he recorded an 8-4 mark with a 4.01 ERA in a 106 1/3 innings. In addition, he pitched five complete games, while striking out 64.

With the right-hander’s selection, Liberty has now had players taken in every Major League Draft since 1999.

The draft, which held its first 20 rounds on Tuesday, concluded with the final 30 rounds on Wednesday.

Catcher Notre Dame HS (AZ). A guy who has always been on the fringe of my lists, frankly because I've seen so little of him. I still don't have a great feel for him behind the dish, but he swings it well enough from the left side to warrant some serious love. Shows some good wood bat pop from a short, connected stroke.

Batted .477 with 7 HR and 44 RBIs in 86 ABs

Round 50
RHP Kendall Volz
6'4", 225 lbs
Attended Smithson Valley HS in Texas and made the All-State team.
Ranked as the 86th top HS prospect in the nation prior to the start of the 2006 season. He has a strong commitment to Baylor and that is the reason he dropped so far.

Gammons likes our draft:

• The Diamondbacks had one of those drafts that if the medicals pan out, they could have reap a pitching bonanza. There were red flags raised on Scherzer much of the season, but scouting director Mike Rizzo saw him throw very well and got medical clearance. Throwing in Georgia reliever Brooks Brown, talented Oklahoma H.S. LHP Brett Anderson and taking a chance on Oregon State's Dallas Buck, and it was a high-risk, high-reward Tuesday. In April 2005, Buck had a shot to be the first player chosen Tuesday. For whatever reason, he did not maintain the Kevin Brown velocity he showed on the Cape in 2004. But whether or not he requires minor surgery, Buck has had it in him and can get it back.

I found a few of the past rankings for players we drafted this year:

#11 overall
-RHP Max Scherzer (#3 ranked college draft player for 2006)

#34
-RHP Brooks Brown (College #40, 2006)

#55
-LHP Brett Anderson (High School #3, 2006)

#86
-RHP Dallas Buck (High School #92, 2003 and College #10, 2006)

#87
-OF Cyle Hankerd (College #65, 2006)

#147
-RHP Hector Ambriz (College #80, 2005)

#387
-C John Hester (College #80, 2006)

#657
-OF Danny Perales (High School #58, 2003 and College #96, 2006)

#1335
-C Justin Brashear (High School #26, 2003)

#1485

Now, these rankings are made at the beginning of the year and only represent those players eligible for the draft. The first number is their selected number in the 2006 draft.

I found this video of Dallas Buck pitching and it looks like he has some minor mechanical problems. Does anyone else notice his knee locking up and his right leg not propelling his body through the pitch?

Too give you a comparison, here is a video of Tim Lincecum. Watch his delivery and see how his left knee is bent and his right leg comes up and through the rotation.

Your right about his left knee locking up. That could lead to some knee/leg injuries. I'd like to see him fix that.

I don't think Buck uses his body enough. He relies on arm strength(And boy does he have that) too much.

Hopefully when this kid hits the minors, pitching coaches pickup on some of these flaws as they could make or break his career.

Look out for Ohlendorf. Drafted in third round of 2004 after Drew and Mock, looks like he is putting it together finally.

With the Buck signing, basically the only guys left to sign are Scherzer and Anderson.

I'm sure this is simply "agent talk" but Boras might be the most annoying person in all of sports (yes, worse then Rosenhouse). Where is he getting his judgement on saying that Scherzer should get Pelfrey type money when the guys drafted before and after Scherzer this year got half of what Pelfrey did last year. So far, these "preliminary talks" don't look too good and we could be looking at another last second signing. Boras aggravates the hell out of me

From the Arizona Republic:

Boras sighting

Agent Scott Boras, who represents Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew, took in Sunday's game, sitting next to General Partner Jeff Moorad in the owners' seats by the dugout.

Boras also advises Diamondbacks' top pick Max Scherzer, whom the club selected No. 11 in last month's draft. Boras said he had a "preliminary" discussion with General Manager Josh Byrnes about a contract for Scherzer.

"He was the big arm in the draft, much like (Mike) Pelfrey was in his draft," Boras said, referring to the Mets' top pick from last season. "When you get a chance, particularly with them picking where they picked, to get those kind of guys, it's much like Stephen was, it's really an important part of an organization to build upon."

Boras was asked if it will help negotiations knowing that the players picked just before and after Scherzer have already signed, getting bonuses of $2 million and $1.6 million, respectively.

"No," he said. "Much like Stephen's contract and with other premium guys like Pelfrey last year, No. 8 and No. 10 had nothing to do with Pelfrey at No. 9."

Pelfrey signed a four-year major league contract in January worth a guaranteed $5.25 million.

Boras is nuts if he thinks that Scherzer is "the big arm of the draft," or if Scherzer is as good of a prospect as Pelfrey is.

Exactly, this is why Boras pisses me off.... He compares Drew's draft situation to Scherzers??? You gotta be kidding me. Drew was ranked by many as the number one prospect in that draft but many teams stayed away because of Boras and the fact that Drew was saying he was going to play his senior year at FSU. He fell to us at 15 and we had to pay him top-5 money but we knew that. Scherzer just came out of a draft dominated by college arms and he went exactly where he was supposed to, #11. What is Boras thinking saying he is the big arm of the draft and comparing his situation to Pelfreys? Andrew Miller and Luke Hochevar were the big arms of that draft and will get paid like it. Guys like Brandon Morrow, Brad Lincoln, Clayton Kershaw, and Lincecum were all more highly touted than Scherezer and went before him for that reason. Then you throw Scherzers arm problems on top of all that......... Boras is an idiot

I would not put too much stock into what he said above. More than likely this is just a typical Boras stance on money. He knows that Scherzer was not the big arm of the draft but he still wants a boat load of cash to make up his 10%. We knew this when we have drafted previous Boras clients and nothing changed with Max.

Exactly why I'm hoping it's just typical "agent talk."

Does anyone have any news on Brett Anderson and where we are on contract negotiations, any cnace itwill get done soon or is it a lost cause? I know it might be awhile before Scherzer signs with Boras being his agent and all.

Scherzer still remains unsigned, joining Ian Kennedy (Yankees) and Daniel Bard (Red Sox) as the only first rounders still without contracts.
