The Phoenix Coyotes will pick 3rd on June 22nd, their highest pick since moving to the state. The Coyotes currently have seven picks, including an extra first rounder (Dallas - 21st). I think that the top three on our wishlist is Pat Kane, Kyle Turris, and James Van Riemsdyk. In the event that Kane/Turris go first and second (good probability of that happening), the Coyotes would be elated to go with Van Riemsdyk. He has the skating ability and size (6'3 200 lbs.) that the Coyotes absolutely love and he comes from the US National Team Development Program which Phoenix has drafted from extensively in the last few years. Van Riemsdyk on the same line as Coyotes draft picks Peter Mueller and Blake Wheeler could one day be an Olympic medal winning line for the US, on top of a dangerous combination in the NHL.

A lot of the intrigue will come from what the Coyotes will do with their other first rounder. New GM Don Maloney has made it clear that searching for a starting goaltender is his first priority, and the extra first rounder just might be his biggest bargaining chip to land one.

Phoenixcoyotes.com currently has a draft preview on their website, including bios on the three players mentioned above.

Mock draft from Hockey's Future:

#3 Jeff van Riemsdyk - "Phoenix told Hockey's Future that they plan to take a forward with this pick. Van Riemsdyk is the best available at this position."

#21 Brett MacLean - "
Phoenix will continue to address scoring and have said they're going to use both their picks looking to take skilled forwards. Along with Van Riemsdyk, the two shore up the Coyotes left side, which has been pretty bare for a long time."

I check in everyday also, just don't have much to add. You seem to always cover the important stuff "Shockey". ;)

I think I heard Derrick Morris and the #3

Hmm...I think I'd do that. This Kane guy sounds like the only real "can't miss" guy in the draft. 62 goals in 58 games...we NEED scorers! Plus, the defense is really strong.

Nevermind I think they were talking about a possible trade with Ottawa for Derek Morris

3. KYLE TURRIS
C, Burnaby (BCHL)
TSN Rank: #3
HT: 6.00 WT: 165
53 GP, 66 G, 55 A, 121 Pts From TSN's Top 60 Prospects:

The Burnaby sniper is a clear-cut top three prospect who really only gets criticism for two things. One is lack of physical maturity, which will be taken in due course. Turris, a good skater, has spindly legs and is very lean at this point, but that should change as he matures at the University of Wisconsin. Two is the level of competition he faced in Jr. A hockey this season. Nevertheless, scouts like Turris's vision, his patented under-the-bar shot and his poise, character and off-ice maturity, which shone through in the interview process.

Turris' coach Rick Lanz, a longtime NHL defenceman, thinks Turris is as talented as any player to come through the BCHL in the dozen years he's been coaching in the league.

"Pound-for-pound the talent level of Kyle is something that comes along only once in awhile" said Lanz. "I had Scott Gomez in Surrey, and Kyle is equally or potentially better in terms of skill set. I would definitely group him in with Kariya, Gomez and such. I think Kyle is in a slightly different bracket with those guys…he's got that extra ability to see the game, dish pucks under duress. There is zero panic in his game, and those are all special attributes."

Got that from a draft feature magazine..

Brett Maclean and Bill Sweatt are still on the board as the Coyotes will pick 32nd and 36th tomorrow. Not a single goalie taken in the first round either, but I would believe it is more likely the Coyotes would package some picks for a netminder rather than drafting one in the second round.

And congrats to Mike Barnett who is officially off the hook for the Wheeler pick, thanks to the Kings selecting Thomas Hickey at number four.

The Coyotes took Brett Maclean with the 32nd pick and goaltender Joel Gistedt with the 36th. The Coyotes look like they're having a pretty good draft, they got the guy they wanted in Turris without having to move up. I thought for sure he would go second overall.

The Coyotes finished up their draft by taking 6'6 goaltender Scott Darling out of the EJHL. This is the second year in a row the Coyotes have taken a huge American goalie in the late rounds, as they took Brett Bennett out of the USNTDP in the fifth round last year who is about the same size.

there wasn't a clear number one goalie.... there were about 6 or 7 goalies that could have gone first. he was number one on the coyotes list though, and that is all that matters.
