yea i didnt wake up at 3 am to watch this but did browse through the game and watched the goal... not overly impressive but they got the 3 pts that were needed... now if we can get a result from nigeria we should be in the knockout stage....

Chap if your going to watch a Tivo'd match i dont think it's a very good idea to read a thread title that says " 2008 Olympics Men's Soccer Thread"

I watched the game, it was convenient since I just got home from work before kickoff. The US wasn't very fluid in the attack and made some serious mistakes on defense but Japan didn't make them pay. IMO Edu & Holden were the 2 best players out there...Edu was just solid & composed nearly all game (although he probably should have been called for a penalty late in the match) and Holden was tireless. Adu & McBride were pretty quiet for the most part, McBride did cause a lot of free kicks as Japan were forced to foul him but neither of them had a huge impact on the game.

One thing I did like to see is that for the most part the US players did not hesitate to dribble at someone.

Dammit! There goes my TIVO of the game...

If you're going to post scores, can you spoiler-tag them if it's the day of or the day after the game? :D

Sorry!

But with so many events on tape delay, early morning, we'd go nuts trying to get the timing down.

But I will try to remember!

if asked before the tournament i would say possible but not very likely.. now with the first match out of the way and nigeria and netherlands drawing that helps... plus netherlands got some red action as well..

any kind of result in the next two and i think we are good to go and i think it will happen.... although that will most likely mean a quarterfinal match vs Argentina and that wouldnt be pretty...

Today could not have worked out better for the US. It'll be interesting to see what lineup Nowak runs out in the next game.

The US is catching a break I hope they can take advantage of it...

Injuries, expulsion, draw dim Dutch hopes
By The Associated Press

TIANJIN, China (AP) - Roy Makaay is hurt. Evander Sno is ineligible due to his expulsion. And a less-than-impressive 0-0 draw against Nigeria can't do much for confidence. The Netherlands looks like a damaged favorite.

Entering as the two-time reigning European under-21 champion, the Dutch came to China - its first Olympic appearance since 1952 - with many predicting them to challenge defending titlist Argentina and Brazil for the gold medal.

Argentina and Brazil both won their openers. The Netherlands was outshot (24-7, and 16-4 in shots on goal by FIFA's official count), and some are saying outplayed, in their first game against the Super Eagles.

"It's not a disaster. We can play better," was the immediate assessment from Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan. "We have time to grow with a draw."

But with a day to evaluate, De Haan sounded a bit more cautious Friday, looking ahead to Sunday's match against the United States.

Makaay, who injured his right foot when a shot was blocked off his foot and had to leave the Nigeria match at halftime, was walking Friday "very difficultly. It was painful," De Haan said.

A trip to the hospital and an examination showed no break, team spokesman Annemarie van der Eem said. But he's out for at least Sunday's game and possibly the group finale against Japan on Wednesday.

Sno was sent off in second-half injury time for a foul on Emmanuel Ekpo and now must sit Sunday.

With a limited roster, three games in six days, and in heat and humidity that official weather forecasts listed a heat index of "torrid, heat stroke imminent," De Haan realizes the Netherlands' obstacles just got bigger.

"In these circumstances, it's a real problem," De Haan said. "Our next game, we'll be down to 14 field players, and we'll use them all.

"We can't change it. We have to live with it. We're going to have to be careful with our energy. We're going to have to very careful, and use our minds in a good way."

Hedwiges Maduro seemed to be most affected, and also had to leave the game at halftime.

"Maduro had the most difficulty," De Haan said. "Today he's feeling better, but we have to talk to him about what he was drinking during the day."

Sno was his replacement, and he's now out. Additionally, Kew Jaliens drew a second-half yellow card and is in danger of missing the group finale if he gets another.

For De Haan, at least, he sees the Americans - and the Japanese - as not on the same level as Nigeria.

"Nigeria is confident on the ball," he said. "They have two very good strikers. The Americans are more of a team on the same level. They don't have anybody extremely good.

"They're totally different than Nigeria, in my opinion."

The Americans, at least officially, are brushing off De Haan's dismissal.

"It all comes down to mind games," said U.S. midfielder Stuart Holden, whose goal gave the Americans a 1-0 victory over Japan on Thursday. "We're fine. If you look at the group, we're not the favorites to advance. We knew that going in. We prefer it as underdogs. There's more pressure on them, less on us."

I didn't see the game but outshot by that much isn't good anyway you slice it.

"They don't have anybody extremely good."

Marvell Wynne strikes me as a player that has the disposition of a hockey "enforcer". It will be interesting to see how De Haan is tackled. I'm not suggesting a vendetta level of aggression toward him but saying something as demeaning as that, deserves at least one professional foul.

De Haan is the Dutch coach so unless Wynne goes on a mad sideline rampage we may not get to see it :D

If Wynne keeps developing the way he is he very well could supplant Cherundolo in 2010, he might be the fastest guy on the team.

Isn't he right? Who on the USA is "extremely good" by international standards?

US men's soccer

The men's team had a 2-1 lead with about a minute to go and the Netherlands scored. A win would of put them in the quarterfinals.

Wow. The US had that game all wrapped up, how disappointing. Now we face Nigeria without Bradley or Adu but at least we only need a draw.

I'm guessing we will see Altidore and Feilhaber starting. Unfortunately McBride won't be able to get a rest in that game which I am sure he would have if it would have been meaningless.

A couple of things...

I loved Kljestans goal BUT he gave the ball away entirely too much the entire match. I like Sacha but I think he still needs some work before he iss ready to be a full time Nat.

Maurice Edu impresses me more and more, he plays smart and he is physically gifted, I doubt he'll be in MLS much longer.

Michael Parkhurst is quiet, he never does anything particularly impressive but he never makes any mistakes either.

The problem with McBride is he doesn't create anything on his own he requires good aerial service and he isn't getting it. I'm not sure he was the right choice for this team based on who he is playing with...none of our players are particularly strong crossing the ball.

:pullhair: ...still an "extremely good" result against "extremely good" players on an international level.

Freddy's through ball on Sasha's goal was "extremely good" and it was "extremely good" to see Jozy finishing. Bradley did an "extremely good" job helping the US side maintain control of the game and keeping possesion.

The more I see Wynne's "extremely good" speed, the more I am impressed with him. McBride really did not have the opportunity to show his "exteamely good" ability in the air as most of the crosses did not get off the ground.

Balboa stated Nigeria will be without a couple of their "extremely good" players, so I expect a close, hard faught, "extremely good" game.

Oh yea, Benfica, Villarreal and EPL clubs rarely offer contracts to players who are not "extreamely good".

Nigeria will be missing 2 starting defenders due to suspensions. Hopefully Altidore can take advantage of that.

Disgusting result to the tournament. Stoppage time goal given up to the Netherlands away from advancing and how the hell do you get sent off in the third minute? Two steps forward and two steps back.
