My Usual disclaimer - I dont pretend to know 100% of the info, so if you think you see something wrong let me know. I rely heavily on scources and my own knowledge of the CBA, so that means if Urban or Sommers gives a cap number I would take their info over mine since their info and sources are better then mine. As usual if a discrepancy happens between my cap info and their cap info I will research further and usually do find the issue that gets us on the same page.

2010 COMP PICK SCOREBOARD
As we know the main thing considered for comp picks is how many qualifing free agents you signed vs. how many you lost. If you gained more then you lost you get no comp picks no matter what the contracts are, and you might get a comp pick if you gained just as many as you lost, but you will for sure get a comp pick if you lost more then you gained. A qualifing free agent is someone who wasnt cut, played more then 6 games last year, wasnt already a free agent before Feb 27th, wasnt let go becuase they didnt recieve a RFA or EFA tender, and wasnt on your team the last yearand IR counts as being on the team last year. For example if we did in fact sign that Keith lewis guy he would not count as a gained qualifing free agent becuase he was cut, but McFadden would count as a gained qualifing free agent. Also was signed by us or another team before the deadline which I believe is in June this year. All the players listed as UFA's above are are current qualifing free agents. So let the score card begin.

Qualifing Free Agents Lost - 2 (Antonio Smith, Texans)(Terrelle Smith, Lions)

As of right now we get 1 7th round comp pick in the 2010 draft.

I was going to wait to do this until after the playoffs were over but with the angst of having to wait until this Sunday I needed something to pass my time. I am sure you all understand.

Now we all saw the report of us having 41 million in cap space for the 2009 offseason. I try to temper that by saying it doesnt include dead cap space or performance bonuses yet to be earned in the 2008 season and what ever performance bonuses that didn’t fit under the remaining 2008 cap would roll over to the 2009 cap space. Well I believe I have accounted for all of those bonuses and it did not come out to as much as I thought it would come out to meaning it didn’t impact the 2009 cap space as much a I originally thought.

Also note that there are 5 players that no one will recognize that also reduced that 41 mil. figure a bit. These players were signed to “future” contracts on December 30th. I was going to wait until the media announced it to bring it up but they haven’t yet so you heard it here first. Anyways these players are:

QB - Tyler Palko
FB - Justin Green
OL - Ben Claxton
P - Waylon Prather

Now for my own take on spreadsheet as a whole, nothing about individual players.

We only have 37 players under contract with just over 38 mill cap space left for 16 more players. We can tender all 16 EFA’s and Tender the 3 RFA’s what they deserve to be tendered for a total of 19 more players and we would still have approximately 27.9 mill in cap space left. Minus about 2 mil. In rookie cap space (high estimate) and we should have approximately 25.9 mill in cap space left to spend on UFA’s. Note that estimate is a worst case scenerio because I am including players outside of the top 51 salaries (we should know the rule of 51 by now), and I included EFA/RFA players we probably wont tender. Se even with guys like Warner, Dansby, A. Smith that may need to be re-signed over 25 mill to spend on UFA’s is plenty of cap space to re-sign your own UFA’s and still be major players in the UFA market.

You may have heard them talking about next year in terms of 2010. I only say that because the only thing that I am aware of is that in the last year of his deal his base salary sky rockets to 8.11 mil.

I dont think its the case but there could be something missing for this season?

Nothing to do with PS.

Players signed to “future” contracts means they are being signed for the 2009 season even though that season does not officially begin until March. Thus the term Future. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s roster when the 2008 regular season ended are eligible for such signings.

So in all guys who were not on a roster, IR list or PS this past December 28th can sign a contract with another team for the 2009 season. But guys who were on a roster or PS prior to December 28th have to wait until their 2008 contracts end in March.

Its sort of like two different free agency start dates. One for those that didnt have a job to end 2008 and one for those that did have a job to end 2008.

JJ Arington - Try and re-sign but only to a contract that suits us. We like what he has broght to the table recently but lets face it he can be replaced.

Monty Beisel - Vet minimum or bring in a younger guy who will cost less.

Bertrand Berry - two year incentive laiden contract.

Elton Brown - See Arrington Commentary.

Ralph Brown - Two year slightly over vet min contract should do it.

Karlos Dansby - Leader and best player on our D. Yes better then Wilson this year. Still young and a Must re-sign.

Eric Green - See Ya.

Antonio Smith - Would like to re-sign but only if price is right, only because it seems as if we have already started to replacement process if price gets to high. Campbell and Iwebema.

Terrelle Smith - Good locker room guy, but lets face it FB's can be replaced. Vet min contract or see ya.

Jerame Tuman - Adios.

Kurt Warner - Two year incentive laiden contract full of incentives sort of like his last contract he signed with us. Make it easy to cut him or let him ride the bench if the slipper falls off and age catches up to him in 2009 and Matt does happen to start.

Clark Haggans - If Berry is re-signed No need for Haggans anymore. If Okeafer doesnt take a pay cut then re-sign Haggans. There is no need to keep all 4 current OLB's considering we will probably add a FA or draftee to upgrade the talent,speed and youth at the position. So one of Haggans, Berry, or Okeafer wont be here next year and I would prefer to keep Berry and Okeafer.

Brian St. Pierre - See ya, #3 QB's can be replaced and replaced by a cheaper younger guy. If not a vet min. contract should get him to sign pretty easily.

Ben Graham - we have liked what he has done down the stretch but his hang time is still low and his production can be replaced. Vet min. contract.

Scott Peters - see ya.

Can't you add another 10 mill in cap space after Okeafor and Edge are released? That would put us back to about the 38 mill cap space available. If Q gets dealt that would be over 40 mill in cap space after everything, wouldn't it?

In the offseason, when teams have buttloads of players under contract, only the salaries of the top 51 count against the cap.

Otherwise you couldn't sign the scads of extra players that are given tryouts in training camp.

Rolle was a rookie hold-out because he wanted to add a 6th "dummy-year" to the 5 year deal the team was offering him.

In that extra 6th year (dummy year) Rolle's contract takes a huge jump to a ridiculous cap-number. The reason Rolle insisted on that extra year is that the team cannot franchise him after the 5th year as they would be able to under the original 5 year deal, that the team offered.

Instead the team is forced to:
1) Eat Rolle ridiculous cap number that 6th year.

2) Give Rolle a new long-term deal

3) Cut Rolle between the 5th and 6th year.

Graves has SO MUCH money tied up in this years salaries to make it APPEAR that we spent to the cap that I can see an additional 8-10 million that could be freed up by simply restructuring a few contracts with a modest raises.

There is no reason what we couldn't give Dockket, Dansby, Wilson and Warner new contracts, go after some good FAs, AND resign veteran depth.

Graves better learn to multi-task or hire some healp, because he is going to have a very busy offseason if he expects to make this culture change permanent.

Mike Jurecki was the one that said Rolle's cap number was gonna increase next year because he hit an escalator. I think he said next year.
