I can't remember a year when so many (hopefully) high-quality animated movies were coming out back to back. Some of the hopefuls:

- Planet 51 - Looks like a clever spin on Monsters Inc. with lots of tongue-in-cheek references to classic horror flicks.

- 9 - Tim Burton with a new story. Looks cool and creepy, Burton style.

- Up - Based on what I've seen so far, I'd say Pixar is back in a big way. The brief footage in the promo is breathtaking. Looks like an excellent family-friendly story.

There are some others that I'm not sure about like:

- Astro Boy - This one's still cloaked in mystery, but the 3-D animation I've seen looks very crisp. No idea on the story.

- Big Man Japan - Actually a live-action film with a lot of animation and CGI. It looks absolutely bizarre and most definitely worth a look on the big screen if you can find a release near you. I suspect this is going to be a huge hit in video. On Blu-Ray on a good TV? Maybe the next pot-head fave. It just looks trippy.

- Ice Age 3 - Meh. This was never my cup of tea. Pretty much strictly for the kiddies. This stuff is probably better served for straight-to-video so as not to clutter our theaters.

- My Dog Tulip - I'm told this is not for the kids. Don't know much about it except it's an adaptation. I'm curious if nothing else.
