With the free agency period officially to get underway tomorrow, there will be a plethora of signings and some trades as well.

Big news today: Knicks close to landing Tyson Chanlder. To do that, the Knicks will have to amnesty (or trade) Billups and perhaps unload Turiaf. There's also speculation that if this goes down, the Knicks might then offer Amare to the Hornets for Paul to reunite Paul with his buddy Chandler.

That actually might make some sense since Amare and Carmelo are basically the same player, and I would take Melo over Stat just on health alone...

So the Mavs are going to lose Chandler to NY and Butler to Clippers and apparently aren't going to re-sign Barea (who won't accept a 1-year contract). The Mavs are trying to clear cap room for next summer. If they manage, they could be the Suns' biggest competitor for free agents.

Looks like Nets are trying to get both Nene and Howard. If they can pull it off, they will end up as the big winners this summer.

And apparently the Knicks have indeed offered Amare to the Hornets for Paul, but the Hornets/NBA isn't likely to take on Stoudemire's huge uninsured contract so I don't see that happening. Still, it will be interesting to see how Amare will react to trade rumors involving him only a year after landing in NY.

In other news:

Kings re-sign Marcus Thornton for 5-years/$40M. Huge contract for a player who had a couple big months last season after being traded. But the Kings needed to reach the salary cap minimum.

76ers are about to re-sign Thaddeus Young.

Glen Davis for Brandon Bass trade in the works.

Turiaf and cash to Wizards. The Suns could have actually made this trade too if they wanted to as NY was looking to unload Turiaf and the Suns have several trade exceptions left. But I guess they don't have a need for another front-court role player.

David West in a sign-and-trade to Boston for Jermaine O'Neal. If West if fully recovered from his injury, Boston just improved tremendously. West will help them a whole lot more than Jeff Green did.

There has to be more to that deal than cited. West was a free agent and O'Neal has a year left for $6 million. Why not just let West walk instead of taking on O'Neal for a year? There must be a pick going New Orleans way.

NY will sign Mike Bibby for the veteran's minimum to replace Billups. They are also trying to sign-and-trade for JJ Barea.

Mike's dad Henry Bibby was drafted by, and played almost three seasons for, the Knicks. And his uncle, Jim Bibby, pitched within the Mets farm system before being traded.

Our team is loaded with decent NBA players. We just don't have star-caliber NBA players. No matter how many journeymen you sign, they do not add up to a star.

Celtics will re-sign Jeff Green to a one-year $9M contract, which with LT will cost them $18M. That's after they've acquired David West.

Howard officially requesting to be traded to the Nets. Don't you miss the days when players would simply demand a trade from a team, not demand a trade to a specific team? Hey, but if it keeps him from the Lakers and Mavs...

Jason Richardson re-signs with Magic for 4-years/$25M.

David West will sign with Indiana for 2-years/$20M. The sign-and-trade to Boston fell apart after nobody wanted to take Jermaine O'Neal.

Kurt Thomas follows Odom and Carter to Portland.

If Marc Gasol goes to Houston as rumored in a sign and trade (55M) this will be huge for them.

He is old. The most accurate description of Carter I've heard last year was "Half man, half retired." Can't remember who said it, but it was really accurate. He is washed out, and he really doesn't have a whole lot let. Might be OK to play 10 minutes off the bench, but don't expect a whole lot from him.

The Pacers are discussing a McRoberts for Mayo swap. They've already added David West and George Hill on draft day. Indy could be looking strong going into the season with a solid roster.

PG: Collison, Hill
SG: Mayo, Rush
SF: Granger, George
PF: West, Hansbrough
C: Hibbert, Foster

Let's just say I was glad to get rid of him. Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear. Maybe he'll play better (and more meaningfully) for a contender?

cool thanks for the carter updates lol. the mavs have had a lot of vets come in and pick up their games playing under a new role. like stack, marion, even chandler to an extent...but he was still young. hopefully carter will follow that model, but he is old. it is worth i shot I guess...i have not seen him play at all in the last few years it seems outside of a magic game here and there. hopefully he will have a game or two where he picks it up every so often when they need it. that's really all you can ask for.
