I wont encroach on K9's trademark Heros and Goats headline, but I wanted to list the players who I felt played well and above expectations and those who struggled and played below expectations in 2017.

Stars

  • Chandler Jones - Dude has lived up to his contract. It's rare to see a player sign a massive contract and subsequently get better. Led the NFL in sacks, TFLs, and was always a disruptive force in the pass rush.
  • Patrick Peterson - Continues to take on the other team's best wide receiver and make them irrelevant. Business as usual.
  • Larry Fitzgerald - Nothing else needs to be said, but 2nd in the league in receptions and continued improvement in the slot and blocking game is remarkable. Every season he plays after this is house money for the team and the fans
  • Kerwynn Williams - Not a sexy pick, but when both DJ and AD went down, Kerwynn stepped up and improved his game. It was apparent that he became a more patient runner and was looking for holes, even though they were very small. Almost as if he learned a bit from AD
  • Antoine Bethea - Everyone lamented the loss of Jefferson and Swearinger, but his presence and leadership were much welcomed to the secondary
  • Phil Dawson - This won't be a popular pick; however, after a miserable start to the season, he was automatic once the likes of Gabbert and Stanton were behind center. Some of his misses/blocks can be attributed to poor blocking up front on FG and XPAs (thanks, Amos). But Dawson had 5 games of 4 or more FGs. For a while, he was literally the only one scoring points.
  • Buddah Baker - Has a lot to prove as safety, but had some really awesome moments and was an absolute stud as a ST man. Phil and him had the ST play of the year IMO with the lob wedge kickoff that went to Baker against Washington.
  • Josh Bynes - Late addition who proved himself to be a solid contributor from Day 1. Beat out my boy Scooby. Hope he returns.

Scrubs

  • Jermane Gresham - Physical blocker and made the occasional catch, but was underwhelming most of the time and was a liability based on his emotions. I was almost certain he was going to get tossed from a game. If his contract wasn't so prohibitive, he'd be cut during the offseason, but we'll have to live with him for at least one more season.
  • Justin Bethel - Not only did he struggle as CB2, but he somehow got worse on special teams. He was not in on many plays. This may be due to the emergence of Baker, but there's no reason for Bethel to be on this team anymore
  • Brandon Williams - Arguably the biggest waste of a roster space on the team. What does he contribute exactly?
  • Robert Nkemdiche - Whether it's lingering injuries or effort, he continues to underperform and underwhelm. He looked like Tarzan during the preseason, but played like Jane when it counted. Rarely did I hear his name or see him make an impact at the point of attack. I do think he needs to come into camp in better shape and with a better attitude. He leaves much to be desired.
  • Evan Boehm - For a guy who was hyped to be a potential starter as a rookie, he proved himself to be awful and hasn't developed at all. If you can't start in front of AQ Shipley or Watford, you probably suck.
  • Troy Niklas - Good news is that he was finally healthy. Bad news is he did nothing when he was on the field, which leaves him with zero excuses for not contributing. Can make an argument that he lost us the Washington game with his costly drop at the end.
  • John Brown - I feel for the kid, but it seems like whatever ailment he has is lingering and has negatively impacted his explosiveness and energy. I'm rooting for the kid to have a comeback season, but not counting on it.
  • JJ Nelson - Apparently found an old pair of Bryant Johnson's gloves in the locker room. So many dropped passes!!! Still can be a threat on go routes, but has to do a better job of catching the football.

I'm likely omitting a few from both categories, so I'm eager to see how you all feel.

remember when Bethel said he was going to earn his contract back? HAHA

Williams was a 3rd round pick in a year where we had no 2nd. oof. in fact, if you want a real laugh, just go look at our entire 2016 draft class. where are these guys?!

I kind of think Chad Williams belongs on the scrubs list. A third round pick that couldn't beat out Jaron Brown or Nelson or even Golden for that matter. I think Corey Peters belongs on the Stars list.

The Niklas bashing continues. How about the way overpaid Tyrann Mathieu who does nothing except chase WRs who leave his sorry ass in the dust. The continued fascination with Ricky Seals-Jones who is a WR in truth and not a TE.At least the OP mentioned that wasted #1 pick Nkendiche as a goat.

That is a perfect description of JJ Nelson, right there.

Stars I would add:

- Corey Peters
- Tramon Williams
- Olson Pierre

* I think if Kerwyn Williams, and Phil Dawson (no, I do not think Dawson should be on the list) makes the stars list, then so does Drew Stanton who went 3-1 this year, and won the last 2 with over 1/2 the offense on IR. Bonus: Drew Stanton's play has brought the term "arm punt" into my vocabulary, and I am grateful.

Scrubs I would add:

- Blaine Gabbert:
Guy got his shot, and did nothing with it. Had a good week, but in the end, his stats were on par with Drew Stanton, but without the wins, and worse, Gabbert's stats ended up being EXACTLY what they have been throughout his career. Yes, the Cardinals needed to see what they had in Gabbert, and what they had was exactly what Gabbert has been his whole career. The Gabbert experiment was a complete wash. The Cardinals gave him and opportunity and he did not do anything with it.

- Evan Boehm:
Because he was so bad he should be on here twice.

I considered Gabbert and if I had a "meh" section, he'd definitely be there as would Stanton. Neither did much to ignite the offense, and the only one scoring points was Dawson.

Nobody said he was or is aq star.He was solid okay this season. The hatred for Niklas and the slobbering over Seals-Jones and Momah is absolute horseshit nonsense.
How was he, "solid"? The "slobbering" over Seals-Jones is because an UDFA/practice squad/development player showed more promise in a select few games than a 2nd round pick in an entire 3-4 years. RSJ is a better blocker, is faster and catches the ball better than Troy. RSJ's talent oozes on the field and he is still raw. He is a TE. I'm excited to see where thingsgo with him. As for Troy, he is what he is and that ain't changing. Promise is why fans "slobber" over RSJ, while lack of promise is why most are ready to see Troy go.

RSJ earned a spot in training camp next season. Nothing more, nothing less.

100% agree. He has promise, but he also seems to taper off once there was tape on him, and he had some poor special teams play as well. Just look at the Seattle return, that was on him.

Solid lists, I agree with the additions of Seals-Jones & Pierre.

Kerwynn Williams really knocked my socks off down the stretch. Gotta love a guy who yo-yo's off the practice squad a zillion times then when given a chance to be "the guy", comes through as he did, despite playing hurt. I really admire that dude. Wish him much success moving forward - and no more practice squad time!

I almost put him up there, but he had like two good games and fell off the map. His production was directly correlated with Gabbert's play. Probably not his fault. However, he did enough for me to want to see more in 2018.

Yeah... Gabbert's success/failure was directly related to the O-line. It was like watching Leinart survive 6 straight blitzes in 2 series WITHOUT losing a yard (no thanks to his O-line) and then watching Anderson move the ball a few yards because NOBODY was blitzing and have Anderson declared the starter, because he "moved the ball". Good coaching and analysis there, Whiz. Stanton did not get near the pressure Gabbert did, because other teams thought he sucked... so let him try (and he fooled a few of them).

And how Badger was not part of scrubs is beyond me. He may have played like a 3 million dollar player (maybe) but THAT is not what we are paying him.

If we do not have a completely revamped o-line next year (and I do NOT include Valdheer and Iuapati in the revamping), you can kiss off any hope we might have, no matter who is the coach and no matter who is the Qb. And please don't start the "we had so many changes on o-line" argument, we sucked on day one and never got better.
