PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Matt Fitzpatrick and caddie Billy Foster have parted ways.

Their partnership stretched for six years and netted multiple victories on multiple tours, most notably the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, and most recently at the 2023 RBC Heritage.

“Well, after six years, all good things come to an end,” wrote Foster in an Instagram post. “This game never stops to frustrate you and infuriate you. Unfortunately, times change and ultimately it’s the caddie or the coach that has to accept results are not good enough and when you stop enjoying what you are doing it’s time for a change. Thanks, Matt, we had a great run and who knows where the next chapter will go. Onwards and upwards.”

Foster was on the bag this week as Fitzpatrick competed at the Players Championship. Fitzpatrick shot 78 on Thursday, the second straight week he’s opened with that score, and this time he missed the cut. He’s yet to record a top-20 finish this season in six starts.

Foster is a legend in the caddie ranks, having worked previously for the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood. He said the decision to scale back was his own and one he’s been edging towards for several years.

After caddying players to victory 45 times, he finally experienced the thrill of being on the bag for a major winner with Fitzpatrick at the 2022 U.S. Open after many close calls. Foster was hoping to be on the bag for what would extend his record to 17 Ryder Cups as a caddie – and he still could – but it doesn’t appear that it will be with Fitzpatrick after their split.

“It was a great journey,” he wrote.
