Mike Sando had another excellent article for The Athletic on Wednesday in which he cites "NFL executives unfiltered on 2024 free agency: The best and worst from all 32 teams", and tallies "the average per-year salary (APY) of players who were added from other teams and players who left to sign with other teams, along with the differential between the two" for each team.

The Cardinals' section:

Arizona Cardinals

APY added: $55.3M (12th) | APY lost: $12.5M (32nd) | APY differential: $42.8M (2nd)

The Cardinals prioritized both lines and added cornerback help, with execs singling out the $15 million APY for former Bengals tackle Jonah Williams as good value.

“The guys they got — Bilal Nichols, Justin Jones, Mack Wilson, Jonah Williams — are not stars, but they are 26 to 27 years old and have started a lot of games,” an exec said. “Even in Desmond Ridder, you can see the logic. They had success with Josh Dobbs, and now they add another version of Dobbs in Ridder.”

The 10 players Arizona added from other teams averaged 27.1 years old, sixth-youngest in the league and youngest among teams with more than five additions. Receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was the highest-valued free agent to sign elsewhere.

“They know they are not going to win the Super Bowl now, so let’s not pay someone we are going to miss the window with,” the exec added. “Let’s get some younger guys, pay them middle-tier money and then we will build with draft picks.”

Yep, exactly what we should have been doing...last year. When I was told these guys don't exist. This year is when we needed to add a few Big Johns.

Once again Monti's plan was to tank and clean up the CAP. What you wanted would have screwed up the tank and wasted a year of those FA's time with us.
Your big Johns would have meant manipulating the CAP to fit them in.

Sorry Mulli, I keep posting this but not nearly as much as Stout.

He did screw up the tank. Now we're not really high enough for a "haul" in draft pick compensation, Houston's draft pick was way down at the bottom of the draft, and we're still hoping our franchise quarterback can play as good as, like, Geno Smith next year.

Keep the faith.

lol Not really. The only accurate thing in here is we would have one less year of control. Whoop-de-do. We're still carrying tons of cap and would more than easily be able to carry two mid FA contracts into this offesason. Yours is the false argument that we have to continually keep our powder dry when it's common knowledge we don't. The cap isn't this ginormous hinderance that forces us to roll money over year after year folks want to pretend it is.

This is correct at this point. Monti gets a 2nd chance to "nail the draft" this year...but there is no way anyone can say we did so last year now that we are a season further along. We passed on the DROY in a position that is still one the weakest on our team. We drafted PJJ, who looks solid, but not spectacular, and we got the 27th pick in the draft.

No obviously hindsight is 20/20...but if we would have known those things at this time last year, there is no way Monti should have made the deal. He would have hopefully stayed, taken Anderson, and moved on.

The scariest part of all of it to me is that its been said "Monti would have picked Paris at #3". If thats true...its seriously a fireable flaw in the thinking process. PJJ is a project tackle who was not in any way a sure thing. If Monti would have spent our #3 pick on him over a guy like Anderson...then he shouldnt be an NFL GM...no two ways about it.

Lets hope its just "we got our #1 guy" talk to try and make Paris feel good.

The only way Monti redeems himself this year is either sticking and picking and landing really good, early contributing players....or he makes a deal that also shows immediate results...like moving down to #5 and still getting MHJ....or getting Nabers/Oduze....another starter...and a 1st round pick next year.

I think this is happy talk and fairly speculative. He had the deal to move out, and he had the deal to move back. Both were in place probably well ahead of the draft.

I also disagree that PJJ is a "project tackle." He seems pretty built out physically and played a bunch of snaps at a high-profile program. He's probably in a lower-quality conditioning program here than he was in Columbus. Mims is a project tackle.

I don't know anything about redemption. I think the Cards won't take a step beyond eight wins without an outstanding draft class as a whole. People are getting the wrong lesson from the lack of playoff success from Megatron and Andre Johnson -- a great WR can't do it on their own.

That would be PJJ, who had a better first season than perennial All-Pro Lane Johnson, right?

Yup, Monti is in serious need of redemption.

P.S. 20/20 hindsight and revisionist history are not the same thing.

Concept to ponder:

When trying to establish a culture of hard work, positive attitude, and unselfish behavior...
It can be less complicated and less resistance when one starts with a group of players who have no sense of entitlement because they are legit grateful for the opportunity.
Then you add young moldable players into the existing culture.

One might posit that such players are difficult to locate within the existing ranks of established NFL players.

Agree...but even Mims isn't a huge project. Dude is a lab created prototype who had the rare ability to dominate with just his physical talents while playing at a major program....some play time is his biggest need...but a small amount of coaching regarding the folly of leaning into pass protection is a close second.

Year 1 was all about evaluating KM. That’s why they drafted OT and gut the roster in order to absorb K1s contract if they needed to move on from him.
