24 Movie in the Works
Source: Chris
June 17, 2005

The Calgary Sun reports that a movie based on popular Fox series 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, is in the works.

Canadian director/producer Jon Cassar said, "The last I heard, the first hour will not be in real-time, but then something big will happen and real time will kick in. It still has to be worked out -- it's at a stage where they need to write it."

Cassar will not predict a storyline for the big screen version of the show. He says the script will likely depend on what's happening on the series prior to the movie coming out.

"It could still be two years from now, so it's far too early to say," he says, adding even if he did know, he wouldn't give it away.

24 Producers Plotting Feature Franchise
Source: Entertainment Weekly
January 9, 2006

Entertainment Weekly's new cover story reveals that producers of Fox's 24 have begun plotting a film franchise for Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland's character in the hit series.

"It can be an amazing series of movies," Sutherland said. "One of the things I've experienced making this show is that an audience can handle a lot more than we thought when we started — the tension, the anxiety.... If we could [compress] all the energy we spread over 24 hours of programming and put that into 2, I think we'd knock your socks off."

The fifth season of 24 premieres with a two-day, four-hour event Sunday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 16 (8:00-10:00 PM). 24 will air original episodes – no repeats – every week for the rest of the season.

72 More Hours for Jack Bauer
Source: Variety
April 10, 2006

24 star Kiefer Sutherland has signed a deal to stay with the Fox show for three more years, through May 2009, reports Variety.

As part of the pact, Sutherland will establish a production company on the 20th Century Fox lot to produce series programming for both broadcast and cable networks.

The deal makes Sutherland one of the highest-paid drama actors on television.

Sutherland, currently co-executive producer on 24, will be bumped up to executive producer for the upcoming sixth and seven seasons of the show. He shares that title with creators Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, as well as Howard Gordon and Evan Katz.

Finally, while the deal with Fox is for TV only, Sutherland said he and the show's producers continue to believe in the idea of bringing the 24 franchise to the big screen. The earliest the movie would begin shooting, however, is late spring 2007, Sutherland said.

Quality control is the chief reason a 24 feature couldn't shoot during the upcoming hiatus, Sutherland added.

"It was really Joel and Bob and Howard realizing that if we were going to squeeze it in during the break, we would have been rushing it," he said. "If we were going to do it, we would do it next summer. It's still a big 'if.' We would not go forward unless we thought we could do it right."

The film likely would depart from the series by condensing an entire day into about two hours, rather than unfolding in real time.

Sutherland isn't shooting a feature this hiatus in anticipation of working on a 24 film next summer.

Good news for fans of the tv show and potential film.

Wow, three more seasons of 24? I was almost certain they were going to kill ******** for good this year and end the series.

However, this has been one of the best seasons yet...

Holy crap. Great news. I trust they will do some things to keep the series fresh. Probably need to add a few new characters too, maybe bring back Chase?

If you think about it, the only main characters are;

Jack
Audry
Chloe
Curtis
Bill Buchannan

...and to a lesser extent;

Wayne Palmer
Aaron Secret Service
Kim Bauer

I've never seen a single episode of X-Files or the movie either.

They tried to make it free standing, but it was a continuation of a multi-season long mythology storyline, so someone who has seen the X-Files would probably appreciate it a lot more.

I had a weird thought that Jack would end up adopting Evelyn's daughter (I figured she'd die) to give him a "second chance" that he isn't getting with Kim.

Fox Moving Forward with 24 Feature
Source: Variety
June 8, 2006

The clock is officially ticking down toward a 24 feature film, reports Variety.

Twentieth Century Fox has closed a deal with series creators Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, as well as showrunner Howard Gordon, to bring the Kiefer Sutherland real-time thriller to the big screen.

Surnow and Cochran will write the script, with Gordon working on the story. All three will produce via their Real Time Productions, as will Imagine's Brian Grazer.

No talent deals are yet in place, though Sutherland -- an executive producer of the hit Fox series -- has made it clear he's interested in starring in the film should it snag a greenlight.

Cochran, Surnow and Gordon will begin work on the script late this summer, just as production on the sixth season of the TV series gets under way.

Executives at 20th should have a draft of the script in their hands by early winter. Once they see the script -- and look at ratings for the first few episodes of season six, which kicks off in January -- they'll be able to make a decision on greenlighting production of the film.

Under the most optimistic scenario, the feature would be greenlit early next year and film next spring and summer during the hiatus between season six and a likely seventh season of 24.

Current plan calls for the 24 feature to abandon the real-time conceit of the TV show, making Sutherland's Jack Bauer, rather than the clock, the star.

How can you have a 24 feature, and then ignore the clock?

Kiefer Sutherland on the 24 Movie
Source: Crave Online
January 8, 2007

Crave Online talked to Kiefer Surtherland about the upcoming season and the movie that is in development. Here's a clip:

It's something that we really, really want to make. The real key difference would be that the 24 hour film would be a 2 hour representation of a 24 hour day. It would be the first thing that we didn't do in real time. Mainly, you have to understand, we're making two episodes every three weeks. We would have three months to make a two hour [movie]. Just to have that kind of time to really allow our cinematographer and our director and the writers to focus on such a finite thing. And actually be able to do a film that really has a conclusion, I think would be really exciting not only for us to make but I think for an audience as well. But the thing that I'm most excited about that is that we're going to make it within the context of still running the show.

Postponed because the script wasn't ready.

It's now on for next summer.
