David Slade to Direct 30 Days of Night

David Slade (upcoming Hard Candy) will direct horror film 30 Days of Night for Columbia Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, based on the Steve Niles graphic novel, is the latest production from Ghost House Pictures, the production company launched by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Raimi and Tapert are producing, while Grant Curtis is overseeing the production for Ghost House. Mike Richardson, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane are executive producing.

Columbia will handle North American distribution of the film as well as in a few international territories, while Mandate Pictures will handle the remaining international rights.

30 Days of Night centers on a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, where the sun sets and doesn't rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, a husband and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

I haven't read the graphic novel, but it got a lot of buzz.

A town invaded by vampires during a month of darkness...

Most of America has yet to see British director David Slade's first feature film, the psychological thriller Hard Candy, but it must have impressed producer Sam Raimi of Ghost House Pictures, because he hired the director to turn the Steve Niles-Ben Templesmith horror comic series 30 Days of Night into a feature film.

ComingSoon.net spoke to Slade about his vision for the film, which starts shooting in the summer in Alaska and New Zealand. "Brian Nelson's writing the script, so that means we have a very original take on the genre," he said. "Indeed, I don't believe there's much of the genre left in what we've written, but it's very faithful both to Steve Niles' writing, and the town and the esthetic--we hope at this point, because we're not shooting until the summer--will be very close to Ben Templesmith's artwork. But we're going to maintain the level of realism."

Although 30 Days of Night is probably some time off, you can see Slade's masterful visuals in Hard Candy, which opens in select cities on April 7.

Ever heard of a movie called The Fog?
Yeah, but 30 Days of Night doesn't have a fog, so I guess I don't know why you're calling it unoriginal and comparing the two.

The way it's described here sounds like something similar to the Fog, although the Fog brought ghosts and not vampires.

The fact that its a vampire movie doesn't make it all the more original, either.

So any movie with a vampire is unoriginal? I've read the comics. It's really quite an original story, IMO. It's actually more of a blade-like (though I hesitate to describe it as being "like" anything for fear of it being labelled as "unoriginal.") netwrok of vampires that get tired of only being able to feed for a few hours a day, and get the bright idea to convene at this alaskan town that's plunged into darkness for a month. Hillarity ensues. (kidding...it's not a comedy).

Maybe hilarity DOES ensue! That would be cool... ;)

ComingSoon.net reports that Columbia Pictures and Ghost House Pictures' big screen adaptation of the Steve Niles graphic novel, 30 Days of Night, will hit theaters on October 19, 2007.

The horror film centers on a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow where the sun sets and doesn't rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, a husband and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

David Slade ("Hard Candy") is directing the film.

To add, there is bonus footage that requires age verification (yeah whatever). But the additional footage is freaking intense to say the least.

Sucked out loud. At least the first half. We walked out and got a refund. Vampires talking in another language (which sounded like dick, dick dick). Hartnett acting like a nutcracker. More unintentionally funny than scary. Lots of really, really white teeth. Stupid as all get out.

I caught 7 different accents trying to be northern US accents. None of them were even close...some sounded russian...some sounded french. Just a brutal, brutal flick. DotKen should do a kumite final with this movie and Battlefield Earth but the world might implode from all the sucktitude on display.

As an aside...the preview for Steven King's "The Mist" looked BAD ASS...however, it felt too long. And when a trailer feels too long it is a BIG red flag to me that the movie isn't going to be that great. Just sayin.

That's a bummer.

I do, however, still recommend the "graphic novel," (that's the way hollywood positions comic book movies ;)).

In fact, you could use the ASFN amazon store and order it now!

2nd half was decent.

The reason for all of the other accents was explained as that town being the only town where people like them could survive.

I had one problem with the film

The little girl vampire was forced and her line was cliche

Other than that it's a vampire film. They weren't trying to make an award winning flick.

Worth the price of admission for me.

i thought the movie was pretty decent. lots of action scenes and the vampires were very brutal. only a couple cheesy points in the film that i could remember.

Recently watched it. Not my favorite genre, but it was interesting enough to enjoy watching once. I'm a fan of Ben Foster, so it had that going for it. And the dark scenes looked pretty good in HD.

I thought it was pretty good. I didn't like the timeline, I thought it jumped forward too quickly, but overall I'd recommend it.
