I thought the NBA said that any catch and shoot would take at least .08 seconds, and that if any less time was left on the clock, the shot would have to be a tip in.

To count that shot is a joke. But the league loves the Fakers, so...

It's B.S.

that's close. i thought the rule was a catch and shoot had to .8 seconds remaaining on the clock and a tip had to have .4 seconds remaining.

They did away with those rules because the refs can now review end of quarter plays. The problem with this is that they only review if the ball left the hands before the shot clock went off. They don't review if they actually started the shot clock on time (which was the problem here).

Maybe the All Star weekend should include a catch and shoot contest. Give each two man team .8 seconds to pass from out of bounds and hit the shot.

That would sound about right. I only saw the replay once, but it didn't look like a tip to me.

And yes, I'd agree that the timekeeper didn't do the Spurs any favors in terms of starting the clock at the right moment.

But it's all water under the bridge now. I just hope Timmeh and the Spurs can come back and win the next two. I seriously HATE the Lakers.

The rule used to say it took 0.6 seconds to catch and shoot, but as Joe said in another thread, someone on the magic pulled off a shot faster, so they redid the rule.

I am pretty sure the new rule is it take 0.4 to catch and shoot, and anything less has to be a tip.

They actually just showed that play on the halftime show on TNT. It was Baron Davis of the Hornets against the Orlando Magic a couple seasons ago. I believe the original rule was that you did not halftime to catch the ball , turned , and shoot it with less than 0.8 seconds left in the game. Baron Davis clearly did it with 0.6 seconds left. A play with Derek Fisher was different because Fisher was already moving and really caught , turned about 90°, and shot the ball in one motion. He probably did not really do it in under 0.4 seconds, but it was darned close. Really it was too close to blame anyone for the loss.
