It's always nice to get a 4 star player on your team, but to get him to walk on without a scholi is incredible! Mike Nixon is now a part of the Sun Devil football team, and he is paying his own way right now(Dodgers paying?)...He went to Sunny Slope high, and signed with UCLA but ended up signing a nice contract with the Dodgers as he was a 2 sport athlete...Baseball didn't work out, so now he's a Devil...

This is a great get for the Devils. He is already physically matured (probably mentally as well), is walking on, and has 4 years of football eligibility. My only worry is how rusty he will be from the layoff of football.

Also, Im not sure about all the crazy NCAA rules, but I assume he can't play for ASUs baseball team at all- anyone know if thats correct?

Funny when a "highly-rated" player goes to ASU a celebration ensues and the system used by Scouts/Rivals is used as proof a guy is good yet when a guy with a similar rankings commits to Arizona the star system automatically becomes fraudulent or irrelevant.

I know Nixon was a QB in high school. Is he going to stay there or move positions because there's no way he sees the field at ASU in the next four years at QB.

He was rated as the 7th best safety in the nation coming out of highschool. What a nice find. Is there an article talking about this or do you have personal knowledge? Go Devils.

True but he hasn't played football since he was drafted by the Dodgers. I have met Mike on a few occasions and he is a nice guy. I wish him the best of luck.

Being that this kid is local, their is a good chance that a lot of ASU fans had seen him play (though admittedly I have not). No one is praising him only for being a "4 star" player, but rather because he is a physically matured athlete (who is probably more mentally matured than most college players, being as he is 23 and has real life experiences) who wants to walk on to the program. I think the star system is a bit silly, but it is probably right more times than not. It seems like you are just going out of your way to slam ASU.

No, I'm going out of the way to point out the hypocrisy of ASU fans like AZBaller who on other threads dismiss the accuracy of the star system when it comes to Arizona players yet use the same star system to prop up ASU players.

I've never seen Mike Nixon play and have no idea what he is or isn't capable of, but I'll gladly admit there must be something good about him if everybody who's scouted him seems to think he has a chance to be an excellent football player. And as we all know, two-sport players are usually tremendous athletes.

I can't think of 1 time where I said ua had a bad recruit. I might have questioned if a certain player would qualify, but never said that a player wasn't good...I might have shown where coaches didn't think certain players were the best at there position in the nation, but I never called a player bad. I figured that if ua fans want to look only at stars, then maybe I could interact better with them by showing stars, instead of my personal opinion on the player...You can't win for losing sometimes.

BTW, the star system is flawed...And NO, I didn't say it applied to AZ players only...I only questioned why someone in Ohio judges AZ talent, without coming to see games firsthand...And I also wondered why the Class 5A Big School player of the year in Texas is only a 2 star player?

If you don't bring up stars, then I won't either.

BTW, Nixon will be playing either safety or linebacker most likely.

When Mike came out of AZ some considered him to possibly be the best athlete ever to come out of the state. I was sorely disappointed to see him go to UCLA. I would really like to thank the Dodgers for paying for his college so we do not have to use a scholarship on him.

Mike is a great friend, has been since high school. Great athlete and very intelligent (finished 3rd in his graduating class). I luckily never had to play against him since he was 4A and we were 5A. But he was and is still a legend at Sunnyslope. He played QB, S, K, and P. Not to mention his baseball and basketball skills. He will be an asset for the ASU football team.

BTW he will be playing safety, not big enough for LB.

That's fine then. I just don't see how someone who believes the star system is flawed can use the same star system to rate players as you have done many times on this board alone.

You the man Scott! I'm gonna flaunt this for a while. I guess it was a good year for both of our former schools. Thanks for posting that.

Maybe his game doesn't project well to the Div-1A level. Just a guess.
You might be right...The knock on the kid was that he had an AWESOME oline, but ASU also signed the best olineman from the team, and that kid is also a 2 star...BTW the scout from that area was fired by SCOUT, and his replacement is going to update the rankings...

I thought I already answered that question? Did I not?

If you want to have the last post, then that's fine...
