Closer than expected---which is good. But the game stopped being competitive early into the second half...and the harsh reality of how far the Cardinals have fallen from contention in the NFC West sank in like the fog into the tide at San Francisco Bay.

I like what I saw in Brian Hoyer---but was leery to see that his first ten throws in each half were 10 yards or less. To his credit, he then went deep a few times to his favorite target Michael Floyd---with very good success, because by then the Niners were sitting on all the dinks and dunks...like everyone else does.

To this day---I do not have any understanding of why the coaches insist upon 2 yard passes to the TE. Another one of those 2 yard passes should have been intercepted today--and the others set up second or third and 8s.

I still don't understand why no matter who is the QB we can't even run a semblance of a screen pass.

Still don't understand why Williams Powell wasn't used more---

For that matter watching Senio Kelemete get his first taste of action---why has he been sitting through a 5-11 season gathering moth balls on the bench? Why?

Still do't understand how the coaches would elect to keep 4 TEs---one of whom did not play for weeks and weeks on end---and yet even after Skelton went down in the first game, and we all knew that Kolb was unfortunately one hit away from the IR---why a young QB like Brian Hoyer was sitting out there all this time (until PIT called him a few weeks ago)---and yet, no calls from the Cardinals with Jason Licht (of the Pats), as DOPP in the house to boot?

Don't understand why WE here at ASFN were crying out for the Cardinals to claim him during Labor Day weekend---and yet no such thing until Week 16.

Still don't understand how there is speculation that the HC will be retained after the following:

* 18-30 last three years

* losing streaks of 6, 7, and 9 games (Jim Harbaugh's biggest losing streak in SF in two years? One game. That's the competition folks---like it or not).

* 1-5 in the NFC West this year (last 5 games, not competitive, in fact the Cardinals lost to the Rams, 49ers and Seahawks by a combined 157-36).

* 3rd down conversions last 12 games?:

4-14 (STL)
5-16 (BUF)
1-10 (MIN)
2-14 (SF)
6-15 (GB)
2-16 (ATL)
4-13 (STL)
0-15 (NYJ)
2-12 (DET)
3-15 (CHI)
3-12 (SF)

32-142 (22.6%)

* interceptions the last 6 games: 9 (3 for TDs)

* TD passes the last 6 games: 1

Back to what happened today---

Don't understand how Patrick Peterson was so badly schooled by Michael Crabtree for two games in a row---or how Peterson could put up such a shabby effort after being named to the Pro Bowl.

Still don't understand how with Jay Feely every on-side kick is a penalty for off-sides or the ball not going 1o yards.

Glad to see the Cardinals clamp down some on Frank Gore for a half.

Glad to see William Gay make a great tackle.

Glad to see Justin Bethel busting his tail to try to block FGs and XPTs.

Glad to see Feely make his FGs.

Glad to see Zastudil add to the record.

Glad this difficult to watch season is over.

After watching Kelemete fail to pick up two stunts - one which resulted in a big sack, I can see why he was inactive when we already had two other rookies on the line. But he looks like he will be impressive.

Biggest disappointment today? Peterson playing risky and sloppy on Crabtree.

Next disappointment? The plays you reference, I feel like they are there as a result of Skeleton/Lindley playing so poorly that we have those there as confidence/rhythm builders. Who knows, I don't like them...too bad Fitz screwed up and cost us an offensive series and then later Floyd fumbles, Hoyer seemed to be getting a better read on things at that point.

What a terrible season to watch.

I saw Kelemete get held badly on the first stunt sack---that's what they do the 49ers...they cheat up front.

If you watch the replay the DT has his arm around Kelemete's back and his holding his jersey.

What I loved is how physical this kid is.

And---how athletic.

It took more than half a season to see Nate Potter---and he was one of the few bright spots.

it seems everything that happens with this HC happens eight weeks late---if it happens at all.

Glad to see Zastudil add to the record.

Sadly Dave came up two punts shy of tying the NFL record for most punts in one season. :(

Hey Mitch.... Curious what you think.

I see Kelemete, Potter, & Massie as better suited for a zone blocking scheme. Their body types seem like a perfect match.

I wasn't able to watch the game, but I was watching the play by play info. Dan Williams looked to have a very good game as far as stopping the run. My question is where was Darnell Dockett? He had no stat lines but I'm assuming he played? Was he just that invisible?

It also looked like Paris Lenon got injured and Bradley did an admirable job in his place.

I agree with the frustration, but shouldn't that be Grimm taking the heat? He is the OLine coach AND Asst Head Coach, I assume he is putting his top 5 players out there and telling everyone else he knows what he is doing.

And IMO that's what it appeared, they either did or did more of today. W

As often as PP21 was torched by Crabtree, there were too many times where we allowed Crabtree to be matched up with a safety or even a linebacker. How did Horton allow THAT to happen.

I totally agree with you, Doctor J.

But, I am not a big fan of the zone blocking scheme.

I think all three of them can be solid in any scheme---given time, quality instruction and patience.

Exactly. Two weeks in a row Peterson looks clueless in a zone---and yet that was what he was so good at at LSU. Weird.

Sure m8nn---all of the offensive coaches are culpable.

We don't even know if the team will try to re-sign G Pat McQuistan. Quite possibly not---so, playing him for shiggs and gittles in front of a player your drafted in the 5th round when the record is 5-10 makes no sense whatsoever.

Just as with Brian Hoyer in a way.

Check this out:

The real guy who was auditioning for 31 teams today was not Beanie Wells---it was Brian Hoyer.

He's free to sign with any team.

The Cardinals have no rights on him after today, according to Darren Urban.

Is this sarcasm? Because PP21 has always been known as being best in press man coverage.

Stanford just re-signed Shaw to a lengthy extension.

The most interesting coach in the world these days to me is Chip Kelly---I would love to see him bite off Pete Carroll's kneecaps the way he did before Carroll split USC. Harbaugh had trouble with him too.

Chip Kelly is as competitive a coach as there is.

He will find a way to beat you...so help him.

I watched a bunch of tape on him at LSU and they used to have him sit back in a zone like a hawk---

What I never understood was why at LSU with the game on the line they rarely had PP assigned to the best WR, in favor of setting him up in a zone to the side of the field they guessed the opponent would throw to.

They lost to Alabama, imo, because they didn't put PP on Julio Jones on Bama's game-winning drive, in which Jones took it to the house.

Like I say, I could never understand it.

Wrong Kelly IMO. :D Brian Kelly I would agree with.
When I see Chip I see Steve Spurrier as an NFL coach...over his head!!!

Brian Kelly would not have the impact on NFL players the way Chip Kelly will.

Brian Kelly is an old-schooler---Chip Kelly is new wave.

I just don't like college HC's that run some herky-jerky zip-and-zag offense.

Give me the smash-mouth old-school college guys or the great pedigree, "my offense has been awesome in the pro's" NFL coordinators.

Or, Just hire Andy Reid and make Gailey or Norv his OC. I love that idea.

Were about to see how good he is come next year because he's going to run from his cheating ways at Oregon. All I know is his small, speedy guys gets smacked in the mouth when he plays some bigger fast guys. I believe in much of what you say, but I'm strongly on his side of the failure fence.

The great coaches adapt and get on board with the times---look at what Shanahan has done with RGIII---and there's no bigger proponent of the smashmouth running game than Shanny.

Rare mitch, rare. IMO outside of RGIII & Kaepernick not many guys offer what they do in offering a lethal passing attack along with the run. IMO Scam isn't one
