I heard on "The Sportszone" a week or two ago that the 49ers were VERY thin at almost all their positions. Even more thin than THE CARDINALS!

The Associated Press
Ahmed Plummer, the 49ers' starting cornerback, left the field on a cart during the first quarter with a bruised left ankle. Scott Gragg, the starting right tackle, sprained his ankle when Stubblefield rolled onto him in the second quarter. Backup offensive lineman Craig Osika and Wilson also sprained ankles.

Jeff Garcia sat out to rest his sore back, and Garrison Hearst joined him on the sidelines along with defensive tackle Bryant Young and cornerback Jason Webster.

What's going to happen to their depth now?

Garcia's back is the big news. He told Pam Oliver on air last night there's nothing wrong, the specialist can't find a thing, he's ready to play. The 49ers say they're being cautious, so nobody really knows if he does have a bulging disk, how bad is it etc.

But he did get to talk to Pam Oliver which would be pretty cool to me.

Dorsey and Doman played well last night they both showed more arm than expected.

Justin Fargas looked great for Oakland over 100 yards in scrub time he sure does run hard between the tackles, if he can stay healthy he could be a great story.

Kwame Harris looks completely lost right now he's really confused in the blocking schemes, if the injuries force him to play very often early in the season he might get the QB killed.

Re: bulging disc...

can be a very scary thing. You might feel fine, but one false move can put you on your knees; literally. Other days you might just have a soreness in you leg, from your butt all the way down to your foot, and nothing will relieve it.

Epidurals worked great for me. (I believe Garcia has received similar treatment.) Then again I am not getting smacked around on the football field. But still I have to be aware and cautious every day. I don't even like people patting me on the back because of it.

If Garcia does indeed have a bulging disc, it could be the beginning of the end of his career.

Pam Oliver is a babe.

49ers | Rumph Out Indefinitely
Wed, 20 Aug 2003 07:15:33 -0700

Updating previous reports, Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports San Francisco 49ers CB Mike Rumph (groin) will be out indefinitely after an MRI revealed a mild strain in his left groin. The team doesn't have a set timetable for his return, but Rumph might miss the regular season opener.

EDIT: And their secondary was already horrible

49ers | Replacing Webster - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 19 Aug 2003 07:31:37 -0700

Updating previous reports, the Contra Costa Times reports, with San Francisco 49ers CB Jason Webster (knee) out with a knee injury, CB Mike Rumph will step into the starting lineup. In response, CB Rashad Holman will likely take over the nickel back position Rumph formerly occupied, although veteran Fred Weary is also in contention.

NOTE: of course, now Rumph is injured for the season.

I was surprised to find out that Jeff Garcia is the same age as Brett Favre!

Do the Niners have anyone waiting in the wings to take over? This could be a great opportunity for the Cards in the future; both the Rams and Niners look to be getting old. We could be competing with the Seahawks for the division in coming years.

Arthur - "Indefinately" does not mean "the season". It basically means anywhere from a week to maybe two months. Season-ending groin injuries are very, very rare. Since it's a muscle strain, it'll be whenever his body heals. I'm almost certain that he'll be back on the field no later than, say, October.

The 49ers have always been thin on their roster. They pay starters all the money, and then have a bunch of minimum-salary-type players as backups. They've managed to get by with such a top-heavy roster because of the incredible health that they've had. If this is the season that the gabmle catches up to them, they'll be in the basement, big-time.

If the D is any worse than it was last year, no amount of epidurals for Jeff Garcia is going to get them above 8-8.
