San Francisco 49ers star defensive lineman Justin Smith announced his retirement on Monday in the latest blow to the team this offseason. Smith's decision had been expected for much of the offseason but did not become official until the team made the announcement that the 35-year-old defensive stalwart would not be back. ''As a football coach, you will always be searching for the next Justin Smith, knowing full well you will never find a player quite like him,'' 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said. Justin Smith is a hand-crafted football player.'' Smith is the third defensive star to retire from the 49ers this offseason, joining linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.
