The San Francisco 49ers should be looking to bring in competition for kicker Jake Moody this offseason. The Indianapolis Colts may have given them the perfect opportunity to do so.

Indianapolis on Thursday announced the release of veteran kicker Matt Gay after two seasons with the club. Gay spent his rookie season in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before spending his next three years with the Los Angeles Rams. He joined the Colts in 2023.

The 31-year-old has had an up-and-down career where he's gone back and forth between dreadful and elite. His worst year was in 2019 when he connected on only 77.1 percent of his 35 field goals attempts. His best year was in 2021 when he earned a Pro Bowl nod for making 32 of his 34 tries.

During his two-year stint with the Colts, Gay made 64-of-78 attempts (82.1 percent).

This is the level of competition the 49ers should be looking to bring in. Gay is proven NFL veteran with a Pro Bowl on his resume. If Moody continues struggling in training camp, Gay is a player the 49ers could quickly rely on to take over. If Moody answers the call and puts together a strong camp to win the job, it wouldn't be a problem to let Gay go since his contract isn't liable to break the bank.

Moody, a 2023 third-round pick, had a dreadful 2024 campaign where he hit only 24-of-34 field goal tries. His 70.6 percent made FG rate is the worst in the NFL for kickers with at least 34 attempts since 2012. The 49ers aren't fully ready to give up on their former third-round pick, but a player like Gay could easily step in and wrestle the job away.
