There's a case to be made that trading down in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL draft is the best move for the San Francisco 49ers. They swung the opposite way with a radical trade up in a two-round mock draft penned by Fantasy Life's Thor Nystrom.

Instead of letting the draft fall to them in Nystrom's mock, the 49ers leap up to No. 5 overall in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. San Francisco sends the No. 11 and No. 43 picks to the Jags in exchange for the No. 5 and No. 142 picks.

With the fifth pick, the 49ers make a splash and add Penn State tight end Tyler Warren.

Via Fantasy Life:

The 49ers currently have 11 picks, and I’ve been told they’ve been looking into the possibility of a flashy move up in Round 1 for skill help—San Francisco likes Warren.

It's an easy match to make between the 49ers and Warren, but the move would be shocking considering the ramifications for the rest of their roster.

San Francisco doesn't particularly have a need at tight end. They could use a long-term replacement for George Kittle and perhaps a better pass catching option than Luke Farrell, but the need at TE pales in comparison to the glaring weaknesses elsewhere on the roster. In fact, assuming an extension comes for Kittle, TE will be the only position the team really invested in this offseason. Farrell also got a three-year deal worth up to $15,750,000 with $11 million guaranteed.

The 49ers have major needs to fill early in the draft. They need defensive line help. They could also use some help in the secondary, on the offensive line, at linebacker and at running back. Investing their first two picks to move up and take another TE doesn't make a ton of sense. San Francisco would be much better off waiting to see who falls to them at 11 or trying to move back to accumulate more middle-round draft capital.
