I guess they like their rookie punter. Lee was pretty good though when paired with their solid defense. Now they have neither.

Lee, 32, is the longest tenured member of the 49ers. He was selected in the sixth-round of the 2004 NFL Draft and spent his entire year with San Francisco up to this point. Lee is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro. Lee has never missed a game during his 11-year career and has a lifetime average of 46.2 yards per punt.

The 49ers will turn their punting job over to rookie Bradley Pinion, selected with the No. 165 overall pick of the draft last month.

Sounds like a good deal for the Browns. But doesn't he have a big salary?

Wow. I've never heard of a punter being traded before.

I'm trying to figure out why you would trade arguably the best punter and all the football for a seventh round draft pick I don't care how good your rookie looks....

Yeah, I have no idea, either. It is really rare to get a good player not named Tillman in the 7th.

Maybe they are stockpiling draft picks to trade up next year? Dunno.

Special teams are so important, you don't mess with that.

Maybe they want to dump his big salary?

My GUESS is that he has been shooting his mouth off around the locker room about how things are going for the Niners and being negative about it. Other than him being what they see as a cancer, this trade just doesn't make sense. Yeah, there is his salary but they've already had a bunch of salary come off the books due to the retirements.

Besides, there are no free agents worth spending much on now. And, if it is planning for the future, they could've gotten just as good a deal after this season was over.

Definitely a salary dump. He was well-paid for a punter, and had "big" drop-off last year (to hear the Niner fans defend it anyways). His net average fell off considerably, though his gross was above his career average.

After suffering with some of the ham & eggers we've had to endure other than Zasti the last few years, I think this was a HORRIBLE move and big risk taken by the Niners. I don't care how good the rook looks, that's' no guarantee that he will perform on Sundays. We've seen it a zillion times before - awesome in college or on the practice field, can't cut it on Sunday. Hopefully that's exactly how it plays out.
