One of the staple tenets of Dallas Cowboys roster management is their consideration of how free agent moves impact compensatory picks. Comp picks are the NFL's way of making teams who lose more pedigreed free agents than they sign, a little more whole. Each unrestricted free agent enters a ledger for a team that weighs their contract value (as well as playtime and postseason awards) and the league gives out 32 picks to compensate teams that lose more than they gain.

The Cowboys, along with the Baltimore Ravens, have mastered this dance and in recent years Dallas has started to use those free picks to trade for veterans instead of using them on Day 3 prospects. In 2023, Dallas used their fifth-round comp pick to acquire CB Stephon Gilmore. This year, they waited until their four comp picks were announced, then exercised a trade for CB Kaiir Elam.

As it stands now, the Cowboys are in line for two fifth-round comp picks in 2025. While Chauncey Golston and Chuma Edoga's departures were offset by signings, Jourdan Lewis and Demarcus Lawrence haven't been offset yet. And the Cowboys still have a couple free agents who could enter the ledger as well.

With the threshold for comp picks being around $3.5 million per year based on seeing a fair amount of snaps, one would imagine these players would land on the ledger if they sign during the qualifying window.
