Avoid These Fantasy Quarterback Busts
You Don't Want a Dead Battery in Your Great Engine
By JOHN TUVEY
Fanball.com
Capping off your fantasy football roster with an unproductive quarterback is like running down the battery on your car. You may have a great engine, and there's plenty of fuel in the tank, but it all means nothing if you can't get the dang thing started.

Quarterback Busts

Trent Green , Chiefs

For the past few seasons Green has been a consistent fantasy contributor, flying mostly under the radar of more prominent colleagues yet still racking up a steady diet of 4,000-yard campaigns and 20-touchdown efforts. However, Trent's numbers tailed off a bit last season and at 36 he's hardly a spring chicken. Moreover, the Chiefs still don't have a go-to receiver, unless you're a big Eddie Kennison fan. And the kicker came when new coach Herm Edwards rode into town and proclaimed that the already run-friendly Chiefs would ratchet up the ground game even more. That's a Molotov cocktail of disaster for anyone banking on a fourth straight 4,000-yard season from Green or a return to the neighborhood of Trent's career-best 27 touchdowns in 2004.

Daunte Culpepper , Dolphins

Daunte's been a fantasy superhero in the past, but this season he's sporting the Riddler's costume. The biggest question mark: can he really be all the way back from obliterating his knee less than a year after the injury? Only slightly smaller is the concern that, even if he is back, his struggles in the handful of games where he was healthy are a sign of things to come. And then, of course, there are the nagging questions like how he'll adjust to a new offense and can Chris Chambers be his Randy Moss and will he still run like he did in Minnesota and how will his famously small hands grip the ball in the South Beach humidity? Who knew they made a Riddler costume in 3XL?

Jake Plummer , Broncos

Only once in Plummer's career has he thrown for more than 4,000 yards, and only once in his career has he topped 20 touchdowns in a single season. The Broncos proved just how much faith they have in Jake the Snake last season when they ran an offense that was predicated on rushing the football and not giving Plummer the opportunity to hurt them; they reinforced that stance by trading up to get Jay Cutler in April's draft. Plummer isn't in jeopardy of getting yanked, but notice has been served that he's not in Denver 's long-range plans. With Gary Kubiak, the Broncos' offensive coordinator for the past 11 years, now in Houston , it will be curious to see just what Mike Shanahan asks Plummer to give the team this year. Feel reasonably comfortable it will be something less than what you want from your starting fantasy quarterback.

Drew Brees , Saints

Just as we had come to accept Brees as a legitimate fantasy contributor, the Chargers kicked him to the curb in favor of Philip Rivers . Brees cushioned his fall with a whole lot of dollar bills courtesy of the Saints, but questions remain about his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. There's also plenty of concern about the Saints, from an offensive line that lost Pro Bowler LeCharles Bentley to a backfield that must try to incorporate both Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister to a receiving corps that has to hope Joe Horn isn't on the downslope of his career after last season's struggles. Moreover, Zach Hilton isn't Antonio Gates , who accounted for a large portion of Brees' production in San Diego . While Drew has already shown us enough moxie that we wouldn't bet against him, we also certainly wouldn't trust him with the keys to our fantasy squad.

David Carr , Texans

Surprised to see Carr here? It's probably the last time you'll do so, because slowly but surely things are starting to look up in Houston. The aforementioned Kubiak raved about Carr after seeing him in offseason workouts, and the Texans finally armed him with another downfield target by acquiring Eric Moulds from the Bills . That's all fine and good, but Carr will still spend too much time running for his life behind an offensive line that is hoping two third-round draft picks and a beat-up veteran center can stop the bleeding. Carr has already—and famously—been sacked 208 times in his four pro seasons; rolling him out and plugging in a couple untested widebodies can only do so much, and quite frankly we're not convinced it's enough to allow Carr to reach his potential this season.

I'd put Phillip Rivers on there instead of Drew Brees. Brees is going to a QB-friendly offense in New Orleans, but Rivers is the rook.

From what I've seen of Rivers, I'm skeptical. But, it wasn't that long ago that Brees was almost out of a staring job because of horrid play. If Gates and Tomlinson could turn Brees around, I think they can probably do the same for Rivers. Although Phillip has an unorthodox throwing motion(Bernie Kosar?) he has prototypical size. I don't think Rivers will come screaming out of the gates, but I think he'll do about as well as Eli did last year. Nothing spectacular, but not as bad as Brees was a couple years ago.

He'll be fine. He's in a good situation, WR issues not withstanding. He's sat and learned the game for 2 years, he'll have a very solid defense, good running game and a security blanket in Gates--not to mention Tomlinson is a good pass-cather, too.

He'll struggle a little--as all first time starters will--but he'll be fine over the course of the season. It's not like Shottenhiemer has a complex passing offense.

Don't get me wrong, I like Rivers. I just don't think he'll really succeed in his first year. Green has been producing without a WR for a while now. The only reason I see Green struggling is the age of his line. As for Rivers, I too think we will see him improve over the year. He is just going to rely heavily on Tomlinson. If they have to play catch up, I think we might see him make some mistakes. If I remember right, the Chargers pass defense wasn't all too great. Just my opinion though.

If Duante is healthy, he'll do great in Miami. He wanted out on Minn.
Rivers a a huge upside. The only thin I see from him is a 'smug' attitude. I've seen him interviewed and although he says all the right things, he just seems like he has a huge chip on his shoulder. Remeber, there's a reason Brees started the last few years and IMO he'd still be in SD if he didn't get hurt at the end of the year

I'm thinking it had to do with him being a Probowler. Who knows how good Rivers is going to be as an NFL QB but Steve Young was a benchwarmer untill Montana got injured. Kurt Warner started off his MVP season as a backup untill Trent Green got injured. Brees was playing at a high enough level that you wouldn't bench him for anyone.

Rivers should do fine because anytime he gets in to trouble he just has to dump it to Gates or Tomlinson, who are each among the best at their position.

Rumors has it that Rivers were ahead of Brees all last year, but that Marty concerned about losing his play-off bonus went with the safe choice in Brees.

I think Rivers will do very well, but I'm sure he'll face the usual bumps in his first year as a starter.

Hell, you could even add Kurt to that list if you look at the big picture.

I do not think that I could draft a QB that hasn't played a full year in 5 years.

Boy does he have some great weapons around him though.

You've got to admire Tuvey for taking a specific stand, but what the bleep does he (or anyone else) really know about how those guys will do?

The inevitable "surprise" windfalls and pitfalls each season that propel or hinder the guys who play this game are indeed humbling to those of us who "really think we know". (i.e. If we knew everything in advance, why play the games)?

What rumors? The ones that I was reading from training camp last season was that Rivers was floating balls all over the field and couldn't throw it more than 30 yards without tossing a "hospital ball."

Phillip Rivers = Jay Cutler = Kyle Boller. Sorry fans.

If Philip Rivers had gone to USC, he would've won a national title just like Matt Leinart. I've been a fan of him since his first year at NC State, and the guy just wins. Keep betting against him just like everyone else has since he graduated from high school...

Maybe. I like the Chargers, so I'd like to be proven wrong (they're definitely my favorite team in the AFC West). That being said, I don't think he'll be successful with a coach that didn't want him and doesn't believe in him. I do think that if the Chargers install a West Coast scheme (Andy Reid may be available...), he'll have a chance for success, but I just don't think he has the arm to make it in the NFL over the long term.

As I said, last season Len Pasquarelli reported that Rivers was short-arming passes all over the place in training camp.

Isn't that what was being said about Cutler? That's pretty easy to speculate but i think if either would have went to USC that they would never have seen the playing field because the talent of the QB's recruited is alot higher than at Vandy and NCST. They got their oppurtunity at lesser schools and made the most out of it at the college level.

I don't think Rivers is on the bust list because you've probably had to at least produce somewhat in the past to now be a potential bust. This guy is predicting big dropoffs from productive QB's(sans Carr). What can Rivers drop back from ? He's sat on the bench for 2 years. But, i think he'll be a bottom 3rd level QB.
