The Lions went back to the Georgia well, taking their second Bulldog in this draft with safety Dan Jackson at pick No. 230 in the 7th round. With a little help from Dane Brugler, let's get a quick introduction to the newest defensive back in Detroit.
Jackson didn't have much high school film and didn't make much traction in the recruiting game. Only two Division I schools offered him a scholarship (Air Force and Mercer). He was determined to go to Georgia, so, after a tryout, he met up with defensive backs coach Charlton Warren, got him to watch his film and ultimately got a preferred walk-on spot. He went on to play 47 games for Georgia, with 19 starts.
Jackson was a multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and track. He lettered all four years in basketball and track and set school records in the 60-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles.
Over 300 players were invited to Indianapolis earlier this year for the Scouting Combine. For the most part, players at the Combine eventually get drafted, but there are some occasions where a player gets looked over for the Combine but still crashes the draft party. Often overlooked throughout his football career, Jackson found a way to get his name called in the 7th round by the Lions.
Like a true southern boy, Jackson grew up hunting and fishing -- Huntin', Fishin', Lovin' Every Day by fellow Georgia boy Luke Bryan is a great song, by the way -- and is still a avid bow hunter.
Jackson earned an invite to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl and was voted the top safety on the American team.
