24 years old:

Overall Football Traits

Production 2 2009: Redshirt 2010: (9/2) - 14-0-0 2011: (13/0) -19-5-1 2012: (14/14) -30-8.5-3 2013: (13/13) - 42-2-1.5
Height-Weight-Speed 2 Good height, arm length (33 3/4") and bulk for a 34 DE. Hand size (9 3/8') is slightly smaller than average. Adequate top-end speed ton film. Didn't run at the combine.

Durability 4 Groin injury forced him to leave Senior Bowl and prevented him from working out at Combine. Left 2012 Ole Miss game with apparent leg injury.

Intangibles 2 High reps guy but takes well to coaching and good football character. Daughter (Sydney) with girlfriend. Difficult background. Grew up with very little financially. Slightly over-aged. A 24-year old rookie. Graduated December 2013.

Defensive End Specific Traits

Pass Rush Skills 4 Doesn't transfer speed to power but can get into offensive tackle's frame and get some push to help collapse pocket. Adequate initial quickness and active hands when he kicks inside. Below average closing burst and bend coming off edge. Lacks agility to shake offensive linemen with lateral moves. Likely to come off field on obvious passing downs in NFL.

Versus the run 2 Possesses lower body strength and mass to anchor as a two-gap DE. Uses quick and violent hands to get off blocks. Excels at pressing offensive tackles inside and setting edge. Limited range. Average tackler that has strong hands and upper body strength to rip ball carriers to ground.

Versatility 3 Experience playing DE in three-and-four man fronts. Less experience working at DT/NT. Projects best as a 34 DE. Played on multiple special teams' units.

Instincts/Motor 1 Empties tank when he's on the field. Aggressive and physical. Doesn't gear down when teams double him. Relentless pass rusher that can deliver big hit when gets to quarterback. Above average backside chase and makes occasional play in pursuit despite limited range.

Analysis

Strengths

Very good arm and body length. Outstanding strength at the point of attack. Big stout, power base and superb press strength to set the edge and walk blockers back to the quarterback. Very stout vs. the run. Possesses pop and power in his hands and jolts blockers on contact. Plays square to the line and controls blockers with ease. Physical, drive-through tackler. Extremely tough, hardworking and ultra-competitive. Very well-conditioned with outstanding endurance.

Weaknesses

Average foot speed. Has some stiffness in his body. Plays a bit flat-footed. Not sudden to get off blocks. Limited burst and explosion to reach the outside -- can secure speed backs. Will require some patience absorbing a game plan.

Bottom Line

Long-framed, long-armed, prototype five-technique capable of kicking inside and manning the nose. Very impressive strength and power. Can play anywhere along a "30" front. An underrated cog in a defense, Stinson could play a long time in the league and may never receive his due outside the building.

Alabama DE Ed Stinson 6'3 287, can play across the board on the DL, good arm and body length, outstanding strength at the point of attack.

Darren Urban @Cardschatter
Stinson is a guy who can fit anywhere on the front of a 3-4 alignment. #AzCardinals wanted depth on DL. #CardsDraft

Solid, aggressive, strong five technique player. Good run stuffer. Fills an immediate need in 34DE rotation and can even slide over to NT in a pinch.

These types are always good to have on board. Looking forward to him. Pulling for him. Tough young life.

I like the pick. A good guy to groom behind Dockett for a couple of years.

Depth on the DL is good. Keeps us fresh on all downs. Seems like a good value.
