1. he has proven to have the talent to be a 2000 yd back...only two seasons a ago
2. he has shoed interest in playing in the valley (how often do you hear that?)
3. he can be signed at a discount because of a down year
4. he's only 26 years old (4+ years left in his prime)
5. 4.4 ypc career average with NO passing game to defend (4.7 ypc not including last year)
6. 1333 yd/season career ave (1450/yr not including last year)
7. he's hungry because of a bad season and being disrespected in negotiations

We could do worse than him. He has to come somewhat cheap b-cause of OFP's. Maybe an incentive laden contract?

Bringing Lewis in would free up our 1st pick. It would be safe to say that Lendale White would not be our selection if this were to play out.

So much depends on what else we do here with free agency.

I'm not convinced that he is the way to go. Two years of injury problems. Yes he had that one season, but the other years are just okay. I would prefere if we are going to spend money to go for Edge or Alexander and if all else fails White.

i am intrigued by white but would be nervous to depend on him being there at 10, what do we do if he's gone and we didnt get a back in fa? edge and sa would cost twice what lewis would handcuffing us for ol, fs and dt fa's and bennett cant stay helathy to carry the load, i think lewis makes alot of sense.

as far as those other season sjust being okay, 1350 yds at a 4.6 ypc ave isnt just okay for a second year back when the D is only keying on the running game, with our passing game he'll never see more than 7 in the box

I have to agree with the original poster. You have to make the judgment if the down year is due to a permanent decline in skills, which in this case I dont think so, he is still too young. We would then have our thunder and lightning. Actually, it could be argued he is thunder and lightning in one back. One has to wonder why he wants to come here, but we're not looking for someone smart, just someone that can run:)

I would think with the combination of backs in the draft, and the number of quality backs in free agency already, few would be able to use us for much leverage this year.

Lewis and Arrington would make an interesting combination, but whatever back we get will not have great numbers without dramatic offensive line improvement.

IMO a decent contract with incentives would be the way to go with Lewis. If he has a chip on his shoulder the incentive based contract would be a way to prove that he is still an elite running back. We could also do what we did last year with Warner: give him a one year only contract for $4 million. If he does good resign him before freee agency starts in 2007.

I would avoid Lewis at any price of 7 digits. I'm pretty sure he's done. His numbers last year (ypc) were down, his back up looked much stronger. I am all for spending big money on Alexander or James.. or spending a bit of money on a flyer for Bennett who could rebound from some of his struggles, but I don't see Lewis rebounding this year.

He's definitely worth bringing in for a look. I like the idea of an incentive based contract. It would give him reason to play his butt off (I think it was speculated that he didn't didn't put forth any effort because it was his last year before free agency) and regardless of how he performs he would be cheap for the first year. We need a power back because JJ sure isn't going to get us any tough yards.

Given the choice of who I had rather have White or Lewis I would still take White. I know he is unproven but that is my take.

I would take Lewis in a heartbeat. Not only is he big, but he is a home run hitter.
