Chris Rock will host the 77th Academy Awards telecast, producer Gil Cates announced today. This will be Rock's first stint as Oscar host.

"I am a huge fan of Chris Rock," said Cates. "He always makes me laugh and he always has something interesting to say. Chris represents the best of the new generation of comics. Having him host the Oscars is terrific. I can't wait."

Rock made his screen debut in Beverly Hills Cop II and became a comic to watch when he spent three years on the cast of Saturday Night Live. His transformation into a comic cultural force, though, came with a series of HBO specials, including 1996's Bring the Pain, which won him ecstatic reviews nationwide as well as Emmys for writing and outstanding special.

Rock currently is shooting The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and recently provided the voice of the zebra in the animated feature Madagascar, both to be released in May 2005. His other film credits include Head of State, Bad Company, Down to Earth, Nurse Betty and Dogma.

Rock recently also completed the North American portion of his "Black Ambition Tour" and hosted the 20th MTV Video Music Awards in 2003. He has won three Emmy Awards and two Grammy Awards for his work. He also is the author of "Rock This!"

The ceremonies honoring 2004 achievements in motion pictures will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2005. The 77th Annual Academy Awards Presentation will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland by the ABC Television Network, beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST with a network arrivals show.

WHich one of the nominees would you replace? It would be difficult to replace any of them with Eternal Sunshine. Maybe Ray would be the one I'd throw out for Eternal Sunshine.

Has anyone, academy members included, seen Vera Drake or Being Julia?

Vera Drake grossed 2.2 million here in the US and Being Julia grossed 3.7 million, so obviously somebody has seen them. Doesn't seem like a lot, but considering both didn't get any advertising and they played on a limited number of screens, those numbers aren't that bad.

The only reason I ask is that I remember Marisa Tomei winning Best Supporting Actress in 1992, mainly on the strength of no one seeing films like Enchanted April and Husbands and Wives. I see the same thing happening this year.

I would also wager that Natalie Portman will win for Best Supporting Actress even though she is not that exceptional an actor IMO.

You need to see it. Million Dollar Baby is the best movie of 2004.

You're probably right about Marisa Tomei, but I'm fairly certain that Cate Blanchett will win the Supporting Actress award. She was just too good in The Aviator.

Or The Aviator. I think it is 3 for 3 so far. I'm glad Cate Blanchett won.

It looks like it might be Marty's year.
He certainly has been ignored in the past.

When did this become the Beyonce show?

My thoughts exactly! And what's up with Sean Combs as a presenter? And prince couldn't even pronouce the name of the song correctly. Ugh!

I could think of many other female vocalists who could have done better..but as my 5 yr old daughter said, "Man, she's PRETTY!" :)

Good show tonight, i thought Chris Rock was funny, especially his barb back at Sean Penn...

Jamie Foxx takes home best acceptance speech I think, and I'm really glad Million Dollar Baby took home the big awards...it started looking like an Aviator sweep at first.

I saw the Aviator yesterday, and it just wasn't as good as MDB. Althought, I though Dicaprio was amazing, as was Blanchett.

Happiest win for me tonight was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind winning Original Screenplay...that was an amazing film and I think not as well known as it should be...

Mike
