Air Raid Warning!
The rain held off long enuf for the Cardinals to get in a solid morning practice.
The 25-million dollar man Antrel Rolle was on hand, taking most of the second team snaps at LCB, a handful of first team snaps, and spending a lot of time with the assistant coach(es).
The first team offense was razor sharp today in the passing game, much sharper than Monday and Tuesday morning. The practice was in pads. Bryant Johnson made a sparkling catch at the left sideline on a perfectly threaded pass from Kurt Warner. Larry Fitzgerald was also sharp today.
The offense rotated betwen the 2 TE-2WR formation, and the 3 WR set. With Charles Lee out today (he ran on the side along with Hambrick and Ernest Shazor), Leonard Hamilton had a rough outing in the 3rd WR role. One one play, he lined up wrong, with Kurt correcting him, and Keith Rowen barking, "C'mon Lawrence, get in the game." After another play, Rowen got in his face, then Denny Green had a few words with him. If I'm reading it correctly, this coaching staff really wants Lawrence to step it up. For the rest of the morning, Reggie Newhouse replaced Lawrence as the third WR with the ones.
Aaron Golliday and Adam Bergen continued to get a lot of reps in the two TE sets with the first team. Golliday looked solid catching the ball, and Bergen continued to catch everything thrown his way.
I've been here since Saturday, and Bryant Johnson is simply having a fantastic training camp boys and girls. He is getting open repeatedly, albeit versus the second team, and is catching everything in sight. Look for him in some Allstate "good hands" commercials very soon.
Punt returners today were Dan Sheldon, Fabian Davis, and J.R. Redmond. Sheldon occasionally body-catching passes, which is frustrating both to the spectators and the coaching staff. (At least, he is CATCHING the ball, which is more than many of second and third-team WRs can say.) Sheldon appears to be one of the fastest guys on the team.
Fitz on how many TDs he'll catch this season: "Enough to get us to the playoffs."
Keith Rowen was talking at length with Kurt during warmups.
Bertrand Berry was getting a fantastic pass rush, with a couple sacks/pressures.
Even the second team offense looked better today than previously. That said there's a huge dropoff from first team to second team. Pray for a healthy offensive line.
A new offensive lineman arrived, #70 Chad Bandiera (sp.). He is the third-string snapper.
The wing blockers on field goal attempts are James Hodgins (right side) and Adam Bergen (left side).
The Cardinals are doing a lot of work on screen passes this camp. How much of this carries over to the regular season is hard to know. It may help mitigate the pass rush, and will get J.J. Arrington some one-on-one opportunities in space.
One drill this morning involved linebackers blitzing and running backs picking them up. J.J. seemed to hold his own. He is far from the worst blitz pickup RB in camp.
Anquan was not wearing the nose guard this morning. He ran some routes in one-receiver drills and was catching the ball well (surprise, surpise).
One thing Keith Rowen has brought from Kansas City is the QB hard-count. However, the offensive line (specially the second unit) has to hold their water.
Harold Morrow brings a lot of enthusiasm to special teams. Even though he's probably a long shot to make the final roster, his enthusiasm is encouraging to see.
Thanks for reading. Now give me some more Kool Aid. I'm still thirsty for more.
