Just so I get it on record. I'm doing a little overview on the Cards, but I wanted to mention something now about the QB situation, since it no longer works in the article. Had my guy not returned to school, here was what I was going to say about the QB slot.
Warner has a solid year. I believe you re-sign him to a 2 year contract if he will do the deal for a reasonable number. I would also consider guaranteeing him a position with the franchise after retirement. You’ll see where I’m going in a moment. Leinart is a tougher fix. I still think he can be a decent NFL QB. Remember Matt Cassel. Leinart is better. Considering all the water under the bridge and the fans' impatience, I suspect he will achieve success at a different location. Besides he will be a free agent before he likely starts. The Cards would be lucky to get a third round pick for him, but I’d take it or try to use him to move up in round 1.
Finally I’d draft Tebow. I sat on this board a few years back and told you Eli Manning was the safest QB to come out in years. The Cards couldn’t get him, but here’s the next sure thing to come out. He needs to work on some basics, especially reading defenses and footwork. However, he’s durable, mobile, has an above average arm and is the best leader for his age I have seen. I never use those comparisons to current player references, but this guy is Warner reborn. You couldn’t write a better scenario. I fully realize other evaluators will focus on his weak fundamentals. That’s the only reason he will be on the board when the Cards select. Tebow can sit a year or two and Warner can play. There will be no conflict. Tebow will learn from the perfect mentor. It’s also true that QB is not the Cards greatest need, but with Tebow, you cannot pass on taking him. This guy defines a franchise QB.
This is kind of a mute point and he could well be the first QB taken next year. Forget the guys who rank only on arm strength and technique. Tebow is the whole package and will do what it takes to suceed.
