Bryant Johnson

Often overshadowed by his more high-profile Pro Bowl counterparts (Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, wide receiver Bryant Johnson finally emerged from the shadows during the 2006 season.

A former first round pick from Penn State in 2003, Johnson broke out in 2006 setting new career highs in receiving yards (740), average yards per catch (18.5), long reception (58 yards) and TDs in a season (4). His play provided the club with a much-needed deep threat to complement the 1-2 punch of Boldin and Fitzgerald.

In the season-opening 34-27 win over San Francisco, Bryant notched two catches for 51 yards, including a 39-yarder to convert a key third-down play in the first scoring drive.

The following week in Seattle, Johnson again played a major role in the passing game as he converted a third-and-10 with another 39-yard reception, setting up a Troy Walters touchdown catch two plays later. Again in the third quarter, Johnson showcased his speed with an impressive 40-yard touchdown reception.

The next week the team returned home, and for the third week in a row quarterback Kurt Warner connected with Johnson for the team's longest play of the season, a 54-yard reception in the third quarter vs. St. Louis. Appearing in only his second start of the season, Johnson created havoc for the Ram defense as he tied for a team high six catches for 82 yards.

Playing in a hostile environment at Oakland in Week 7, Johnson achieved personal milestones with 87 receiving yards and a career-best 58-yard reception from quarterback Matt Leinart in the fourth quarter.

Johnson was a big play threat against division opponent Seattle Dec. 10 in a rematch of the Week 2 loss to the Seahawks. On the first play from scrimmage Leinart hooked up with Johnson for a 56-yard touchdown strike, giving the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead in the eventual 27-21 Cardinal victory.

Johnson concluded the season with three catches for 76 yards and a 25.3-yard average against a tough San Diego defense.

By season’s end, Johnson ranked third in the league with an average of 18.5-yards per reception.

Johnson enters his final year of his current contract in 2007 and hopes to continue to prove he has developed into one of the deadliest deep threats in the National Football League.

He's much maligned on this site , but he's making good progress. Needs to improve his concentration. maybe Fitz can work with him more on that.

I prefer that closer look picture of him dropping the TD pass vs. KC.

If it wasn't for the couple of big drops, he could be rated one of the best number 3 wide out in the league. Hope he continues to grow in AZ.

In my opinion, you can't learn "hands" at the pro level. Either you can catch or you can't. Johnson will always drop critical passes. We need to replace him.

Repectfully disagree. I think his "hands" have improved considerably since his rookie year. He used to drop everything and didn't know when to break his pattern off and run to the ball.

True, but he does drop those big passes

I hope his hands have gotten better since his rookie year. He was a first round pick, that should be the least of our worries.

That being said, he should be shown the door. He drops way too many passes, it's ridiculous. Sign Shaun McDonald this offseason and let BJ and Walters leave the next 2 seasons

Am I the only one that thinks it's an odd coincidence that this gets published the same day that the Fitz trade rumor surfaces.

BTW.. I think there's a 0.000001 % chance of Fitz getting traded, but the timing sure is odd.

Johnson has long been one to be kicked around on this board. I have always thought he is a strong receiver and would be a starter on most NFL teams. He made some really great cathes this year and I just do not understand why it is often suggest we trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick or just let him walk. Sure hope we keep him. He is the closest thing we have to speed at WR who can make a big catch.

I'm thinking McCoy steps up this year and takes over the #3 spot ...

I was saying the same about Hayes last year .. these are good players that were just hurt ...

As Bullhead pointed out, McCoy is much more of a burner than BJ. I'd bet good money that he would have put BJ on the bench last season if he had stayed healthy.

Why wouldn't we let him walk? His contract is up after next year and I don't see us resigning him unless he starts performing better. I highly doubt he'll be taking a discount to stay with the Cardinals

It's really quite simple. It's not about the no.3 receiver... it's about who can fill in as no.2, if Boldin or Fitz go down. McCoy (and take the time to check the stats) or Johnson. The answer is self-evident: JOHNSON.

Even if he asks for a lot? I'd rather go to the FA market then give BJ a big payday. To be honest, I'd rather sign Shaun McDonald this offseason (let Walters walk) and see how he does. If he fills in nicely, BJ is more then expendable. McDonald can return punts/kicks and be just fine as the #3 WR. I can envision McDonald being Whisenhunts Randle El

Asks for a lot??? He's under contract. The Cards will decide over the course of the next year whether they want to extend beyond, or not. That said; I've got no problem with adding McDonald to the mix.

Which is exactly why I said let Walters walk and give McDonald some PT in the 3 spot. I'd want McDonald primarily for special teams but he's more then capable of being the #3 WR (at least he can catch). I'm fully aware BJ is under contract for one more year

If BJ can't catch... dump him. But, I'm betting that when the season opens he'll be comfortably ensconced as our no. 3.

(40 receptions - 740 yards, 18.5 av. (3rd in NFL) - 4 tds)

He also blew 2 games because he can't catch. That crap can't fly, I don't care what his numbers are. He can't catch the ball when we need him to which is a huge problem.

Plus, I would bet any number of #3 WR's would have similar, if not better numbers, then BJ did last year. Boldin, Fitz, and Edge draw all the attention away from whoever our #3 is
