This past week, my wife was doing some modeling work at the Consumer Electronics Show. On Wednesday night, Maxim magazine had an event and she was invited to attend. Several current and former NFL players were there including Jeff Garcia, Napolean McCallum and a player that used to play for the Vikings who will go unnamed. Anyway, Ro was talking to the former Vikings player about Denny Green coming to coach the Cardinals. She asked him what he thought about Green. The player's comment went something like this, "Well put it this way. When I got there, we had seventeen white guys on the team. When I left, we had four. I feel that Denny purposely got rid of the white players over time".

Now keep in mind that neither Ro nor I share this player's opinion. I'm just reporting what she was told.

And another interesting thing happened at the event too. Evidently Jeff Garcia was a judge in the Maxim magazine national model search. He was trashed beyond repair and was so completely out of control with some of the female contestants, that they had to end the event early. I told Ro that I always thought Garcia was gay just from his mannerisms and such, and so imagining him getting lewd and rude with the girls didn't track for me. Her comment, "Methinks he doth protest too much".

I guess I don't get your wife's comment does she think he IS gay or is not?

As I mentioned before that stuff comes up all the time here in the Bay Area, I have literally heard local reporters ask him questions like "do you feel the NFL might be a bit too tough for you" or "do you get along well with your teammates you seem to have a different mindset than other NFL players."

It gets to be funny, the guy plays in SF one of these days one of the reporters will just blurt out "are you gay" and be done with it.

I have no idea if he is or isn't, but I know it's a pretty common assumption and wouldn't shock me at all.

The race comment is interesting but I think there were probably several other factors in the number of white players on the team. I don't foresee any problems here.

Garcia getting trashed and lewd in front of women? Sounds like someone's overcompensating for something :D

Yeah, he was white all right. The thing that I took away from it was of all the things this guy could have said about Green, he chose to make a race comment. Obviously the guy is still bitter about it for some reason. Hearing the story from my wife, I kind of pitied the player for still harboring ill feelings towards Green. I mean, let it go all ready!

On a humourous note, maybe the Cardinals will become the first team in NFL history to have an all black roster as well as head coach and GM.

Once again, not that is matters one iota, but yes we both supposed Garcia was gay prior to her experience. After her experience, she felt that his antics were purely an act to try and portray himself as being masculine and heterosexual. In other words, he doth protest too much means, the guy who's making all the noise is usually the guilty party.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Maybe he was cut by Green, and replaced by a better black player...

So I guess Walsh won't be brought in by Denny this year.

Thanks, wasn't knocking the comment at all like I say the question comes up repeatedly in the Bay area, I just wasn't sure if she was saying she thought so or not.

One of the local DJ's on my morning radio station went to HS with Jeff, he often comments on it and says things like "well if he is he is going out of his way to hide it." Sort of implying that Garcia leads a pretty active sex life with women or did when he was younger.

I'm with you I guess I do wonder but I don't really care one way or the other.

I just wish the reporters who want to know would come out and ask it instead of beating around the bush with toughness or something similar like they always do.

If he played in NY instead of SF, they'd be asking him point blank like they do with Piazza. Piazza isn't gay, but the media just loves pushing his metrosexual buttons.

You'd think the same would be true in SF. The recent mayoral contest featured an openly gay (Tom Ammiano) candidate who's been openly gay his entire political life. I don't know maybe Garcia has been asked it off the record and didn't respond well, otherwise it just makes no sense in that town why people don't just come out and ask him when that's so clearly what they're getting at.

It's not like if the answer was yes it would make any difference on the team, if most of the fans think it's true, odds are a lot of his teammates already do too, so if he said yes, they wouldn't care, if he said no, not a big deal to them.

Point well taken. But you'd then have to apply the same standard to Blake vis a vis McCown.

I know - I wasn't the one that was saying that, but a few here have been.

Isn't football different though? I mean the fraternity that exists between players is VERY testosterone driven regardless of the geography. The gay players stay in the closet for fear of how their teammates might react, not so much the fans.

On the other hand, politics in SF is totally unique. I lived there for five months and had a chance to experience it up close. I will never forget the day the Palestinian/Arabic organization had a parade down Market Street and had some of the most hateful, awful things to say about Jews, Israel and the US. They were just looking for a fight in the violent way in which they were acting, but aside from a few astounded tourists, everyone just went about their business and nothing got out of hand.
