NFL.com has a feature ( http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80ef9ffc ) on "Top Ten All-Time Free Agents".

Their list:

10. Bryce Paup - GB to BUF
9. Shannon Sharp - DEN to BAL
8. Stephen Davis - WAS to CAR
7. Rod Woodson - SF to BAL
6. Rich Gannon - KC to OAK
5. Keenan McCardell - CLE to JAC
4. Priest Holmes - BAL to KC
3. Deion Sanders - ATL to SF to DAL
2. Curtis Martin - NE to NYJ
1. Reggie White - PHI to GB

At No. 1, Reggie White certainly was a catalyst for change in Green Bay. Rich Gannon was instrumental in getting the Raiders to the Super Bowl.

The other eight, had great years individually following their moves and helped to improve their new teams overall. But one has to question if they were really worth the cost to the organizations that had to shell out significant $$$. Were any of these players really the defining factor in their teams success?

Besides Reggie White winning one for the Packers didn't Woodson and Sharpe win one for Baltimore. Sharpe was a key cog in that game. Then Deion Sanders was instrumental in the Superbowl wins for SF and Dal. Gannon took what I thought to be a subpar Oakland team and took them to the Superbowl. I think the point you were trying to make is that by spending a ton of cash on outside free agents usually does not help and I would agree.

There is a path of spending to much, but there is also a path of not spending enough. The Patriots over the last few years are a good example who gets good players for cheap and utilizes them correctly.

Sharp caught the winning TD in the SB, but did he make a difference in Baltimore getting to the game? Same question for Sanders, he may have played well but was he the difference in them being there or not?

Yes, we agree in principle - Spend wisely in free agency!
