A Great Man - #48 Nathan Hodel

I received an E-mail today from Nathan Hodel (#48 our long snapper). He was reading ASFN and came across the thread about my brother Mark. He let me know how bad he felt about Marks injury and how happy he was to hear he was doing better, He has offered to come down to the hospital and visit Mark once he is out of ICU. This single gesture from him has brought my family to tears today. As fate has it the doctor today was trying to get Mark to say his first words, He asked my mom what sports teams Mark liked. My mom responded "The Cardinals" so the dr asked Mark "So.. You like the Cardinals?" and Mark smiled ear to ear and said "Yeah" in a low voice. This kind act that Nathan has offered to do will change Marks life and No doubt Mark and I will be wearing Hodel #48 jerseys all next year. Im not sure if Nathan wanted me to put this on the board, but I wanted him to get the recognition he deserves as being a great man with a kind heart, Ive never been more proud to be a Cardinals fan.

Last season I did a feature story for the Cards' game-day program on Hodel, and he came across as a genuinely good guy.

I'm a big Hodel fan. We met his dad once in the airport in Baltimore. He saw me wearing a Cards hat and came up, introduced himself and we talked Cards football and his son, the kicking game, everything else. I'm not surprised Nate showed such decency and compassion. I could tell from his dad they are really solid, decent people. Thats awesome that he would reach out to a fan at such a terrible time. Something nice for your family when you are going through such an awful thing. Hodel is representing what the NFL can be when its at its best.

I didn't say on the other thread, but our families' prayers and thoughts are with your brother. From the stories and pictures it is obvious he is a hell of a guy.

I think it was training camp in his rookie year when my brother and I chanted "I-L-L" and Nate smiled responding "I-N-I". Then dropped some vets pads and chatted with us for a minute or so. He's a cool dude. One of those guys who we'd miss if we lost (both for performance and attitude). Get a picture on the page if you can, I want to see Mark's smile! And ask Nate what happened to the Illini at the Rose Bowl!!!!
