I just watched it. I had no idea that it would be so funny. Paul Bettany was great. Mixing in the modern-day music was a cool idea, especially the Queen song near the beginning.

Plot Summary

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Tagline: From peasant to knight; one man can change his stars
Plot Outline A peasant squire takes up the identity of his master when the knight suffers an untimely demise.
Plot Synopsis: Inspired by "The Canterbury Tales," this is the story of William, a young squire with a gift for jousting. After his master dies suddenly, the squire hits the road with his cohorts Roland and Wat. On the journey, they stumble across an unknown writer, Chaucer. William, lacking a proper pedigree, convinces Chaucer to forge genealogy documents that will pass him off as a knight. With his newly-minted history in hand, the young man sets out to prove himself a worthy knight at the country's jousting competition, and finds romance along the way.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
There's no rule against rock anthems from the 1970s in the soundtrack for a movie about a medieval jousting champion, but if you're going to attempt such jarring anachronisms, you'd better establish acceptable ground rules. Writer-director Brian Helgeland does precisely that in A Knight's Tale and pulls off this trick with such giddy aplomb that you can't help but play along. (Upon witnessing a crowd of peasants at a jousting match, singing and clapping to the beat of Queen's "We Will Rock You," you're either going to love this movie or dismiss it altogether.) Other vintage rock hits will follow, but Helgeland--the Oscar®-winning cowriter of L.A. Confidential--handles this ploy with judicious goodwill, in what is an otherwise honest period piece about a peasant named William (Heath Ledger) who rises by grit and determination to the hallowed status of knighthood.
As if the soundtrack weren't audacious enough, Helgeland (recovering from the sour experience of his directorial debut, Payback) casts none other than Geoffrey Chaucer (wonderfully played by Paul Bettany) as William's cohort and match announcer, along with William's pals Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk), and feisty blacksmith Kate (Laura Fraser). Of course there must be a fair maiden, and she is Jocelyn (newcomer Shannyn Sossamon), with whom William falls in love while battling the nefarious Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) on the European jousting circuit. Add to this an inspiring father-son reunion, Ledger's undeniable charisma, a perfect supporting cast, and enough joyful energy to rejuvenate the film's formulaic plot, and A Knight's Tale becomes that most pleasant of movie surprises--an unlikely winner that rises up, like its hero, to exceed all expectations. --Jeff Shannon

Fun movie, for some reason...

Paul Bettany rocks here, lol...where I first saw him.

One of my favorite movies - I also loved the mixing of modern music (and dance!) into that period setting.

Paul Bettany = Chauncer; great! Oh, and the costumes were fab!

Movie wasn't bad for what it was, but I disagree with you guys 100%, the use of modern songs was disastrous. Just awful, especially when the crowd plays along.

I am with you. I thought that was really bad and corny part of the movie.

It was good up to the point.

Yep the use of Modern Music and bumping and grinding destroyed this movie.

I think it would have been a decent period movie had they not made the music choices they did, and then integrate it into the actual plot.

The movie just for the most part sucked, purist or no.

Stout returns after a long hiatus, and this is his first post... Oddly appropriate, doesn't everyone think? ;)

Great movie - Nice idea by the Director to have the crowd play along with the music.

I'm just curious as to why you think it was a nice idea... I think it was original, but the execution was a failure.

This movie was better than I expected it to be. I watched it probably 9 months ago.

During the opening scene (jousting tournament) - I was initially surprised that they included the song to "We Will Rock You." and thought it was a refreshing twist to periodically include modern music throughout. Sure they could have done a better job with the execution.

With the help of Bettany's acting and others - I think it raised the movie to the level of "dorky fun" status. Off course I went into the theater with an impression that it was going to suck big time - so perhaps that why I give it a better rating because of its originality and not the execution.

Of course I don't always score movies so high on originality. For example while I liked the movie "Stargate" for its originality of plot....it pissed me off that the fight scenes just plain stunk. I would have thought it cool if the military team shot down one of those flying "Ra" planes with a surface to air missile instead of hunkering down. :)

Pretty much exactly what I thought. I had no idea that it was a comedy before I watched it.

I think the problem lied not with the usage of modern music (which I didn't like), but more with how the actors and extras interacted with it. The use of We Will Rock You in a period movie is cheesy, but when the peasants clap to the beat and sing it, it turns into an awfulness that is hard to describe... :D

Did you curl up in the fetal position during Shrek II when they sang "Livin la viva loca"? ;)

Shrek II? Seriously? The fact that it is a cartoon is a big difference from A Knight's Tale. And yes, I did cringe. :D
