Technically, it's not animation. They actually film it like a movie, and then go frame by frame and color the film cells.

"A Scanner Darkly" is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode. It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own experiences.

Like a graphic novel come to life, "A Scanner Darkly" will use live action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process (interpolated rotoscoping) to create a haunting, highly stylized vision of the future. The technology, first employed in Richard Linklater’s 2001 film "Waking Life," has evolved to produce even more emotional impact and detail.

No problem...just funny, I put animation in my post, and after I was done and looked at it, I knew you'd be along to point out it that it's not technically animation...

And then you did...

So? Seriously, why the big deal? It's not like I called you an idiot or anything like that...

No, you never have to come right out and say that to anyone, it's just implied :)

You're just a movie snob, it's your career, so you know a lot about it, and you make sure all of us here know that as well.

It's okay though, I understand...I'm becoming a movie snob with my friends...

Buddy called me up last night, said he watched the Pink Panther remake and said it was pretty hilarious, not at all like the reviews said it. I know he's easily amused, so I just kind of said "yeah, cool man."

But I wont see it, and inside, I'll think my friend is an easily amused simple minded guy, while I sit at home and watch independant and critically acclaimed films...like a snob :)

Um, I wrote 2 short sentences with very little substance.

Man, I thought I nitpicked... :D

It's an animation process applied to live action photography.

Basically they film a movie and go back to make it appear animated (coloring in cells like Chap said).

Cool effect.

Now if they can just use some technique like that to fix Keanu's acting we would have something...
