I’ve never proposed a trade option before. But I really think this has merit. Okay fine it's a pipe dream, laugh your butts off.

Let’s start with Orlando. The McGrady-Hill plan failed miserably. The promising former coach of the year was fired. McGrady is already grumbling. In fact I thought I had heard that he was considering opting out of his contract after next season. In the end Orlando needs to start fresh. Meaning stock piling draft picks. They’re already looking at the #1 pick in this year’s draft.

So here is what I propose:

Trade Shawn Marion, two 1st round draft picks and one of our current young prospects (JJ, C-jake, Lampe, Vujanic) for Tracy McGrady.

The Suns would not be able to give the Magic their own 1st round pick even if they wanted because they still owe the Spurs a pick. However the 2 Knicks 1st round picks and or the Cleveland pick could be enticing.

Of course this trade could not happen until the off season because of Marion’s BYC status. But that would be the perfect time to remake the team especially with the new financial freedom to sign a decent free agent.

Why the Suns do this trade is obvious. They get the first super-superstar back on the team since Barkley left. A line up next season that included:

Tmac
Amare
Zarko
Barbosa
JJ
Lampe
White
Vujanic
Eisley
Little Jake
Suns own 1st round lottery pick
Upper tier free agent with 7 to 10 million in cap space
Harvey (maybe)
Dice (maybe)

Is there any question that this would be an amazing team to watch for years to come.

Why Magic do it?
Because they’re the worst team in the NBA and they’re going nowhere fast. McGrady doesn’t want to be their anymore on a losing team since they fired the coach. If Orlando doesn’t trade McGrady they risk losing him to free agency after next season. With the state of the team it is unlikely they’ll attract many free agents. So getting a star in Marion, 2 or 3 1st round draft picks and a young prospect could be very appealing to a rebuilding team like Orlando.

Is this absurd? Maybe but it sure would be great to see. A superstar tandem of Tmac and Amare working together would be a thing of beauty.

I would rather have Kobe.

I think Kobe is the better, smarter player and doesn't have chronic back problems and is mentally tougher.

TMac hasn't proven anything except that he can fill the boxscore.

Tmac is a bit of a crybaby.

Also there is some kind of rift between McGrady and Amare while on the other hand Kobe and Amare have a lot of respect for each other.

The proposed deal could almost be as bad as the sign and trade for the other #1 from Orlando.

there is one other problem with this trade. amare doesnt like tmac. there was sometype of blow up between them before draft when amare came up to tmac and asked him what to expect in the nba and any advance that he could give him. tmac treated him like a leach and turned around and walked away without even saying hi.

TMac also didn't allow Amare to work with his personal trainer during the summer.

And they were at the same highschool at some point or something like that and Amare approached TMac but TMac just brushed him off.

We should also remember that T-Mac can opt out his contract.

What a dumb idea for a trade.

Now if you included signing Kobe in the offseason so we could have T-Mac Kobe & Amare then I could see some reasoning for this trade...

I've heard three reasons why people aren't interested in trading for T-Mac:

1. He and Amare don't get along all that well.

2. He can opt out of his contract in 2005/06

3. He dominates the ball

4. He has back problems

Of the three, the last one is the most disturbing.

I would suspect that Amare and T-Mac can find a way to patch things up. The opt out is less of a threat if the Suns were good. He dominates the ball because he has to on the Magic (the same issue comes up with Kobe).

But that kind of money ($15 million +) for a guy with a medical problem is pretty scary.

McGrady

I don't see why anyone would trade for McGrady. HIs contract is huge, and he's one game away (not necessary the next one) from being done for his career with his back problems.

Furthermore, why trade away a franchise player like Marion (I'm shocked this board doesn't recognize his greatness more), for someone who will just leave at the end of the season.

I'd be more itnerested in discussing ways we sign McGrady at the end of the year if/when he opts out of his contract than I am talking about trading for him.

Marion had a very slow start this season and his outside shooting has gone down. For a guy with a max contract, it has led to a campaign to get rid of him. They say he is too expensive since Stojakovic is having a better year and gets less money.

This debate began long before the big trade and the chance to get Kobe. Marion critics feel he does not have the ability to make his own shot, he is not a consistent outside shooter, and should not be the first option of the offense. Marion fans point to his rebounding, defense, ability to finish on the break, and hit mid range shots as putting him in the top 5 small forwards.

Since Marion's critics and fans use different criteria to evaluate him, the debate just goes round and round. It would be different if the team was winning, but it is common to blame the team's best players when things go badly.
