Studio: Columbia Pictures
Director: Julie Taymor
Screenwriter: Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais

Plot Summary: At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, Revolution Studios' "Across the Universe" is an original movie musical springing from the imagination of renowned director Julie Taymor ("Frida," "Titus," and the Broadway smash hit musical "The Lion King") and writers Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais ("The Commitments").

A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" (Bono) and "Mr. Kite" (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy – against all odds – to find their own way back to each other.

Shoulda gone to broadway with this first, it seems. Theater could use something original. Now they'll make a broadway musical out of the film and it'll just be another retread...

I wasn't prepared to like this movie because I hate when anyone covers a Beatles song, yet I really enjoyed it. It surprised me. But please, do not use any Beatles songs in commercials!

Saw it this weekend... I really enjoyed it. I'm a huge Beatles nerd, so I was a bit skeptical, but apart from 4-5 songs, I really enjoyed the way they were done. The guy who played Jude did a great job on them

I agree. It was a great movie made around a great soundtrack. Beatles fans won't be disappointed.

I thought this film was f'n brilliant.

Maybe it was a little on the long side, but wow, this was a much better movie than I anticipated.

I also thought the movie highlighted just how genius the Beatles work was/is. So diverse, so adaptable, so timeless.

Get segment with Eddie Izzard as Mr. Kite, too. "Have you been there? It's great; they've got stuff."

I just saw this movie on DVD today. I loved it.

The only thing is I really didn't care for "Sadies" voice...not my style, I wanted to fast forward through scenes with her singing(but didn't).

Oprah was hawking this movie on her show as being an absolute must see, so I figured it would stink... :D

It didn't! Both my wife and I really enjoyed it and she's not even a Beatles fan. Good movie making all around. 4 out of 5 stars.

As soon as the first guy started "singing", I was ready to turn it off. Turrible. Almost everyone sounded tone deaf and silly.

Boo.

I thought that guy was great (Max bugged me, though). I even bought the soundtrack.

This movie was craptastic. Ugh. I was looking forward to it, and I think I apologized to dcr about 4 times throughout it for picking what movie we watched.

I had no idea, none what this was about, but after the second song, I was curious why they were using Beatles songs.

The one good thing about this movie is that it I'm really looking forward to Rock Band: Beatles.

And sounds just as amazing as it looks ;)
If you are referring to the actors trying to sing the Beatles' songs?

I disagree. Or maybe I didn't think it looked that amazing, and you are correct.

I was skeptical at first too, but I ended up really enjoying this film.

You're absolutely right about their work. This film motivated me to request every Beatles CD the library had and load them on my itunes.
